At virtually the same time in 1990, Harry Connick, Jr. released two CDs: one a vocal date and the other an instrumental album with his trio. Lofty's Roach Souffle is the latter, an outing with bassist Ben Wolfe and drummer Shannon Powell. Connick performs 11 of his originals on this set and, although he shows some growth from his earlier days as a sort-of Thelonious Monk imitator, he did not yet have a piano style of his own and none of his compositions are all that memorable. However Connick's timing had improved (helped a lot by the presence of a steady drummer) and the program finds him playing about as advanced as he ever has. ~ Scott Yanow

Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. Hailing from New York city its almost impossible for Shutdown to shed its NY hardcore heritage. And even though they play well and write rhythmic, driving tracks they haven't made their own unique mark on the scene. Singer Mark Scondotto sounds extremely young. His vocals are high pitched and almost adolescent sounding, but the contrast with the heavy music makes an interesting blend. "Network" has Scondotto screaming until he's out of breath. The urgency of his youthful voice adds impact to the rhythm laden breaks between verses. But on the very next track, "Inside Out," he's back to steady, predictable screaming.
