| | Donny Hathaway In Performance CD (1980) (Import) Germany; Netherlands
Life Goes On
$12.65 Donny Hathaway's live soul album IN PERFORMANCE includes "To Be Young, Gift and Black" and "We Need You Right Now."
Though largely revered for his studio recordings, it was on-stage that Donny Hathaway truly became a giant diamond in a sea of gems. Much like his excellent 1972 Live recording and the stellar 2004 These Songs for You, Live!, In Performance features Hathaway taking his audience to church in a way that can only be described as unique, as he truly had an individual stage presence that few others could hope to rival. In Performance isn't necessarily better than those aforementioned excellent records, but it complements them extremely well, with gritty versions of "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" and "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" leading the charge. As usual, Hathaway's delivery is electric and as sincere as a soul artist could possibly get. In Performance's sole flaw is its length. When the audience applause from the finale, "Sack Full of Dreams," has faded, one is likely to find that the 40 minutes spent listening wasn't nearly enough -- a testament to how potent and powerful Hathaway was in his prime. ~ Rob Theakston

| | Maxwell MTV Unplugged CD (1997) (Import) France
Life Goes On
$14.45 "Whenever Whenever Whenever" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
For a brief moment in the mid-90s, Maxwell was his generation's Marvin Gaye. This live set, probably his finest moment on wax, features the bonus track "'Til The Cops Come Knockin'," as well as "The Lady Suite," "Gotta Get Closer," and five more.
Riding the wave of young turks delving into old-school soul that includes D'Angelo, Eryka Badu and Adriana Evans, Maxwell's URBAN HANG SUITE heralded the arrival of a balladeer who combined Al Green's seductiveness with Prince's sensuality. MTV UNPLUGGED shows off the live side of this young free spirit whose musical roots reach through the Quiet Storm into some pretty unlikely places. Throughout this EP, the arrangements are lush, the horns caress every groove and Maxwell's creamy falsetto ducks and feints through his own "Whenever Wherever Whatever" and "The Lady Suite." He also takes time to give props to Kate Bush with a crystalline reading of "This Woman's Work." Showing off a knack for the unorthodox, Maxwell closes out the festivities with a completely transformed cover of Nine Inch Nails' ...
| | Chrisette Michele I Am CD (2007)
Life Goes On
$7.79 Def Jam unveiled a stunning new talent in 2007 with I AM, the debut album from Chrisette Michelle. Though raised on gospel, Michelle's biggest influences are clearly old-school jazz divas in the vein of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan, as their textured, bluesy phrasing can be heard informing her own delivery. Yet Michelle is decidedly contemporary, threading elements of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, pop, and adult-alternative into her unique brand of neo-soul. Help from artists like Babyface, John Legend, and will.i.am heighten the profile of an already mightily impressive debut.

| | Angie Stone The Art of Love & War CD (2007)
Life Goes On
$9.89 The re-launched Stax label is an appropriate home for neo-soulster Angie Stone. Her 2007 album THE ART OF LOVE & WAR, released on Stax, nods to classic styles, blending funk, soul, balladry, and R&B in one tasty package. The appearance of soul great Betty Wright on the album highlight, "Baby," only strengthen the retro vibe.
Yet THE ART OF LOVE & WAR is contemporary through and through. Shimmering with a modern, digital production sheen, the album is clearly steeped in urban contemporary R&B, more lush and languid than stripped down and raw. Stone is no mere puppet of the past (and apparently neither is the revamped Stax): her voice, delivery, and feel are all her own, whether on butter-smooth love songs ("Make It Last") or hard-swinging groovers ("Play Wit It").

| | Blu Cantrell So Blu CD (2001)
Life Goes On
$6.05 "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song.
Blu Cantrell's debut album is disarming in its defiance of expectations--there are no diva-driven, melismatic vocals, the ballads are for the most part stripped-down and spare, and the uptempo numbers are driving and to the point without indulging in street braggadocio. On the evidence of "I'll Find a Way," a contemporary gospel-inflected love song in the same way that Aretha Franklin's best cuts were infused with gospel, Cantrell has a long and distinguished line of influences on which to draw. She also tears through "Swingin'," a faked-up slice of '30s pastiche, with panache to spare.
She's more Lena Horne than Mariah Carey, and songs like "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" show an ease with earthy situations that Ma Rainey would have found familiar. Production values are stock turn-of-the-century urban R&B, but on this showing Cantrell sounds like she'd be equally at home with a big band or a small jazz combo--SO BLU may well be merely a prelude to ...
