Guitarist Joe Cohn is joined by pianist Hod O'Brien, alto saxophonist Dmitry Baevsky, bassist Dennis Irwin, and drummer Chuck Riggs on Restless, a small jazz band outing grounded in the past. Five of the songs, including "Two Marvelous for Words," the title track, and "Shadow Waltz" date back to the '30s, and another, "I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone," from the '40s. Four of the remaining five tunes, however, were written by Cohn, Harry Allen, and O'Brien; they're pieces that build on the band's roots. The band also expands to a sextet on five numbers with guest tenor saxophonist Allen. Cohn runs a tight ensemble, limiting most pieces to five or six minutes, and the range of material, from the bluesy "Woody's Lament" to the frenetic "Fast,," is expansive. For some fans of guitar music, setting the guitar among one or two horns may seem somewhat distracting; whenever the horns chime in, the guitar is shunted to the sidelines. Because of this, the instrumental mix doesn't always jell the way many guitar-centered trios and quartets do. Other mainstream jazz fans will find much to like about Restless, appreciating Cohn's willingness to explore both old and new material in this setting. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

The first fact one needs to know about the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Quartet is that it is, as described in the liner notes, a "working band." This may sound like a negligible fact on Hey, Look Me Over, but it isn't. A number of famous combos in the history of jazz have only played together in the studio. Here, however, guitarist Cohn, tenor Allen, bassist Joel Forbes, and drummer Chuck Riggs have developed the synchronicity that only comes from performing together night after night. For Hey, Look Me Over, that equals an hour of lovely ensemble work highlighted by some well-wrought guitar and tenor workouts on a solid set list. The next thing one would want to know about the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Quartet is that they play traditional mainstream jazz with such pizzazz that one would never mistake it for regurgitated classics. With two or three exceptions, this is an upbeat, happening set, with vibrant versions of Charlie Christian-Benny Goodman's "Seven Come Eleven" and the title cut. Despite their name, Brooklyn's Iller Than Theirs aren't all about proving how much better they are than everyone else. In fact, if anything, they're more interested in showing how normal they are -- and how everyone else isn't nearly as cool as they make themselves out to be. That's not to say there's not a healthy amount of MC braggadocio here: the edgy Atmosphere-esque "Smorg" and the bouncy "Lo-Top Sneakers" both have their fair share of good-natured but confident rhymes ("Bull in a china shop, I'm haphazard/Born under the sign of the Taurus, man/You're holding a map: that's the sign of a tourist," half of the duo, Tone Tank, spits in the latter), but this is only a small part of Iller Than Theirs' repertoire. They don't limit themselves to empty boasts on the self-titled debut.
