Musty Rusty album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly ...

| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Musty Rusty music CDs
$8.75 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces the dreamy interpretation of "But Beautiful," while Wess will melt any heart with his gorgeous flute solo. Wess is best known for his swinging tenor saxophone, heard on the richly textured "Gone With the Wind," a spacious "Stella by Starlight" (which will rival any saxophonist's recording for pure beauty), as well as his bluesy original "Rainy Afternoon," with Donaldson's light percussion possibly suggesting stepping in sidewalk puddles or windshield wipers clearing intermittent precipitation. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Joey Defrancesco Legacy CD (2005)
Musty Rusty songs
$7.09 Extending the good vibes created out of their first pairing on the live recording Incredible!, organists Joey Defrancesco and Jimmy Smith get down to business on Legacy. The two stellar and funky musicians have a great musical rapport and seem to really enjoy playing together. Fans of Incredible! will most likely find much to enjoy here. The album has a heavy Latin sound with percussionists Ramon Banda and Jose "Joey" de Leon supplying additional timbales and conga rhythms respectively. ...

| | Annie Gallup Courage My Love CD (1998)
Musty Rusty music CDs
$15.95 A combination of spoken word and a casual, near-spoken singing style backed by folky acoustic instrumentation gives Annie Gallup a unique sound, quirky and real. Her lyrics are thoughtful, simple stories about ordinary people in ordinary circumstances. In "Blue Dress," for example, a daughter tells the story of her mother, moving back and forth in time and perspective. Poetic and verbose as her songs are, Gallup performs them with a lack of pretension and an easiness that make them instantly palatable and completely original.
Annie Gallup's writing is unabashedly imaginative and richly sensual. She is a teller of short, elaborate tales -- song-length works of fiction that sparkle with the complexity and polish of poetry; tightly packed lyrical strands that crackle with intelligence and spry wordplay, and pulse with insistent rhythm. Her musical instincts are a match for her pen - Annie is a gifted, inventive instrumentalist. Her guitar work is a fresh, welcome interplay of short lead runs and complex picking patterns. (As a teenager in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Annie learned to play listening to records by Doc Watson and blues great Mississippi John Hurt.)Fusing elements of spoken word and poetry with sharp melodies and a trademark delivery, Annie Gallup has created her own musical sub-genre.Courage My Love is Annie Gallup - fully developed. Not a wasted word, not a misplaced image. City tenement to circus tent, Annie's poetry is a series of eerie photographs - moving from wide angle panorama to cellular detail with the ease and grace of a dancer.

$25.25 | | Buckwheat Zydeco Essential Recordings: Let The Good Times Roll CD (2009)
Musty Rusty album
$7.89 Buckwheat Zydeco can be counted on for a joyous, upbeat zydeco party groove and his albums are remarkably consistent in that regard. This set draws tracks from his mid-'80s albums for Rounder Records, including sides from 1983's Turning Point, 1985's Waitin' for My Ya Ya, and 1987's Buckwheat's Zydeco Party, and makes a nice sampler and introduction to what was arguably Buckwheat Zydeco's most commercially viable and inspired period. The title track, "Let the Good Times Roll," "Hot Tamale ...
