| | Uptown Rulin': The Best Of The Neville Brothers CD (1999)
Best Of Toto Cutugno music CDs
$12.65 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
The Neville Brothers had always been critic's favorites, but never more so than during their tenure at A&M Records during the late '80s and early '90s. They released their first album, Yellow Moon, for the label in 1989, a few years after the acclaimed Rhino compilation Treacherous: A History of the Neville Brothers appeared on the shelves. Treacherous contained selections from all the Neville Brothers -- not just group recordings but side-projects and solo cuts -- and helped cement their reputation among record collectors and critics, which in turn set the stage for the enthusiastic reception of Yellow Moon. That enthusiasm failed to wane over the next few years, as each subsequent album was greeted by critics with open arms. The problem was, each record was pretty much the same. With producer Daniel Lanois, the Nevilles attempted to create grand, mythical albums, heavy with import and meaning. Lanois didn't abandon his trademark hazy, murkily mysterious production -- a style that wasn't necessarily suited for the organic Nevilles, even if it did result in some evocative sonic hybrids. Consequently, each of the A&M albums functioned best as a series of moments, even if they were designed to work as individual albums (the prototype, Yellow Moon, unsurprisingly standing as the lone exception to the rule). That's why Uptown Rulin': The Best Of is a solid addition to their catalog. By collecting highlights from the A&M albums, it offers fans a good summary of these intriguing but mixed years. It isn't on the same level as Treacherous or its ...
| | Blue Aeroplanes Huh!: The Best, 1987-1992 CD (1997)
Best Of Toto Cutugno songs
$14.69 1997 compilation on Chrysalis featuring 16 of the Britishalternative act's finest recordings for the label from 1987-1992. Includes 'Jacket Hangs', 'Huh!', 'What It Is' and'Weightless'. The full title is 'Huh! The Best Of The BlueAeroplanes 1987-1992'.
Huh!: The Best, 1987-1992 is a handy sampler of the Blue Aeroplanes' middle period and a fine introduction to this cultily adored band. Many times compilations aren't the way to go with discovering a band's work, but this one is a handy précis of the Bristol-based band's most consistent and listenable work, ignoring both ...
| | Hazard Land CD (2002)
Best Of Toto Cutugno album
$14.69 In 2001-2002, B.J. Nilsen toured Europe and Montreal as part of a Touch label showcase which also included Fennesz and Biosphere. During these concerts he continued to play with Chris Watson's wind recordings, the base material for his 2001 CD Wind, released under his moniker Hazard. Land organizes excerpts from these performances into a suite that works like an extension of that fabulous album. It is not "Wind Live" so to speak, even though the music presents strong similarities with its predecessor -- enough to make this album slightly redundant. Wind came this close to masterpiece level. Its depth, artistry, and originality ensure it a place in the pandemonium of laptop electronica. Land thins out the gravy. The music is nice, but it lacks the organic atmospheres of Wind. The set begins with the 11-minute "Substation," by far the best moment on the album, not only because electronic processing happens entirely outside the listener's ears, but also for its drama. Recordings of a subway train are turned into gigantic ocean waves in a windstorm. The first glitches and tones usually associated with laptop improv surface one minute into the second track, "Church." From then on, the music gradually moves away from the environmental recordings and closer to Hazard's typical ambient electronica. Take this CD as an addendum -- and most of all get Wind first. ~ François Couture
B.J. Nilsen lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. Born in 1975, he began working with experimental music and sound at an early stage. He was influenced by the early tape movements with the pioneers of sonic assault and released his first recordings at the age of 15. Benny founded Hazard in 1996 after a couple of years as a guitarist/bass player in several local bands. He ...

| | Toward The Within CD (1994) Reissue; Special Edition
Best Of Toto Cutugno CD music
$12.25 Original Soundtrack/Dead Can Dance: Brendan Perry (vocals, 12-string guitar, bouzouki, whistle, percussion); Lisa Gerrard (vocals, percussion, yang-chin).
Dead Can Dance's TOWARD THE WITHIN is a live album, but don't let that persuade you not to buy it. Most of the tracks here (11 of 15) are not on any of the group's studio records, and all of them are flat-out spectacular. This is one of the band's best albums, live or otherwise.
The opener, "Rakim," condenses everything that makes Dead Can Dance a brilliant band into six minutes. Musically, it features an instrumental introduction with a dense, droning backing while a bouzouki skitters across the surface and, eventually, a strikingly expressive percussion section. Vocally, it features Brendan Perry singing in a language that you are unlikely to know, Lisa Gerrard's fabulous voice yodeling in a way you have never heard, and a last verse, in English, delivered in Perry gorgeous, resonant tones. If this doesn't sell you on this band, nothing will. ...
