Willie Nelson album
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the arrangements are. A large orchestra, featuring brass, strings, reeds, percussion, and two different choirs, give these renditions a full, sweeping flavor reminiscent of the big bands of the 1940s and `50s. The album also includes an original single, "A Baby Changes Everything," which features one of Hill's most compelling performances.

| | Vince Gill Let There Be Peace On Earth CD (1993)
Willie Nelson music CDs
$5.25 Christmas music releases have become a country music tradition, but the result is often generic mushy background instrumentation on the same moldy standards. Guilty of this is Vince Gill, whose Let There Be Peace on Earth is as cliche-ridden as they come. ~ Roch Parisien

| | Burl Ives Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer CD (1995)
Willie Nelson songs
$4.99 The Rankin/Bass animagic film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared on December 6, 1964. Since then, it has become the longest-running of all holiday TV specials (with, we hope, no end in sight). It's fitting that the grandfather of all Christmas specials features Burl Ives, still remembered warmly by millions as the voice behind the film's narrator, Sam the Snowman. Although this soundtrack bears his name, Ives appears only on a handful of songs: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The remaining vocals are handled by various cast members: "Jingle Jingle Jingle" features Stan Francis as Santa, "We're a Couple of Misfits" is sung by Billie Mae Richards (the voice of Rudolph) and Paul Soles (the voice of Hermie), "There's Always Tomorrow" is immortalized by Janet Orenstein (as Clarice), and a chorus shares "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year." The real musical genius behind the movie is Johnny Marks, a songwriter who had earlier written the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" as well as holiday favorites like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (which is featured in a medley here). His songs, in the hands of musical director Maury Laws, simply sparkle with Christmas magic. The second half of the soundtrack features instrumental versions of the songs, featuring the Decca Concert Orchestra conducted by Herbert Rehbein. The instrumentals keep the holiday spirit flowing, but it's the equivalent of a long musical intermission (in other words, you'll probably find yourself straightening out candy canes on the tree before long). Few soundtracks hold as many happy memories ...
| | Hank Williams Revealed: The Unreleased Recordings CDs (2009) DGBK
Willie Nelson album
$30.79 1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and pre-record shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life's CD preservation of this amazing treasure trove. The performances are intimate and relaxed, and Williams tackles an amazingly varied set list, singing old mountain ballads, hymns, cowboy tunes, and delivering recitations of parlor poems and other various cautionary tales as well. What emerges is a full, rounded portrait of Williams at his creative and commercial peak. "Lovesick Blues" is here, along with fine versions of "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)," "A Mansion on the Hill," and the Williams-composed gospel classic "I Saw the Light," among others, including a spirited instrumental romp through the old fiddle tune "Eighth of January," which celebrated the British defeat at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815 (Jimmie Driftwood added lyrics to the tune and had a huge hit with the resulting "The Battle of New Orleans" in ...
| | Dolly Parton Trio CD (1987)
Willie Nelson CD music
$9.25 A classic modern country album, THE TRIO is as pretty as music gets. The ethereal harmony vocals of three of popular music's sweetest swingers, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, would be enough--their harmonies couldn't have been closer if they were triplets. But THE TRIO offers something more, gathering songs that not only utilize their natural singing talents but also bring out the emotional timbre of their collective voice.
From the ultra-pretty Phil Spector pop classic "To Know Him Is To Love Him" to the hard-country Jimmie Rodgers song "Hobo's Meditation" and the high-lonesome "Memories Of You," THE TRIO brims with musicality. There are several traditional songs, a folk song written by Jean Ritchie, the spine-tingling gospel standard "Farther Along" and some strong Dolly Parton originals. On "Telling Me Lies," written by Linda Thompson, Linda Ronstadt delivers one of her most controlled performances ever.
Import edition of multi-platinum 1987 Grammy winner that's out-of-print domestically. Featuring Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris. Highlights include, 'Making Plans', 'Those Memories of You', 'I've Had Enough', 'Hobo's Meditation', 'Wildflowers', ...

| | Charlie Parker April In Paris CDs (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Willie Nelson songs
$5.89 Charlie Parker's digital discography is peppered with collections using the words "April in Paris" as part of the title. Released in 2000, Blue Night's budget edition contains only about 45 minutes of music extracted from Bird's Verve catalog, the body of works that map much of his progress during the last few years of his short life. The 12 recordings that make up this little taste were made under the supervision of Norman Granz between November 30, 1949 and March 31, 1954 and feature such brilliant improvisers as Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Red Rodney, Max Roach, and Roy Haynes. Charles Parker is also backed by orchestras operating under the leadership of Joe Lippman, Jimmy Carroll, and Gil Evans. While literally dozens of better ...
| | Cubik & Origami Cubik & Origami CD (2005)
Willie Nelson album
$13.25 Some people mistake being jazzy for actually being jazz, but they're two different things. Joni Mitchell, Anita Baker, Sade, De La Soul, Julia Fordham, and A Tribe Called Quest are all jazzy -- they have jazz influences, but they aren't jazz. Trumpeter Miles Davis, on the other hand, was the essence of jazz; even when he became influenced by Jimi Hendrix and James Brown and alienated jazz purists by using a lot of electric instruments, Davis maintained a jazz improviser's mentality. Of course, actual jazz isn't necessarily better than music that is merely jazzy -- a lot of worthwhile recordings are merely jazzy, and this self-titled CD by the duo Cubik & Origami is a good example. Anyone who tells you that Cubik & Origami's work is "jazz for the dancefloor" or something like that is delusional; nothing on this 58-minute disc is actually jazz. But Cubik & Origami do provide electronica with jazz (and hip-hop) overtones, and they are enjoyably good at it. Electronica, of course, is a broad, far-reaching term; electronica is everything from techno to trance to jungle/drum'n'bass to ambient, and this mostly instrumental CD favors the chillout/downtempo side of things. Cubik & Origami are funky in a relaxed, reserved, hypnotic way, and using jazz overtones makes perfect sense for them. Their use of keyboards sometimes hints at Lonnie Liston Smith; also, there is some guitar playing that suggests the late Grant Green. Cubik & Origami are never improvisational the way Smith was improvisational with his Cosmic Echoes or the way that Green was improvisational on his Blue Note dates of the '60s and early '70s, but they certainly know how to use those jazz influences to enrich their heavily produced material. ...

Songs such as “Beat Me Again” speaks of the cycle of abusive relationships. “Time Bomb” examines the nature of personal anger and the potential of the individual to explode if pushed too far. As people tend to turn a blind eye or chose not to care about what’s going on around them, “Vigilante’s Day Off” is a portrayal of just that. The powerful melodic, song, “Thanks A Lot For Nothin’” gives you a look at how dishonest and self-serving people can ...
