This is a compilation of 30 songs drawn from very different periods of Caetano Veloso's long and amazingly creative career, from the early '70s to 2001. The fact that the songs included on this compilation are drawn from such different stages of Veloso's career, and therefore are very different stylistically, is positive in the sense that it gives the listener samples of the great artistic versatility of Veloso's work through the years. On the other hand, it is inevitable that some of the songs on this kind of compilation come across as being out of context. Although many of his songs have become great hits, Veloso is primarily an album artist. The selection of songs included here is OK, but very far from being ideal, and most of Veloso's best and most famous songs are absent. There are, for instance, no tracks from Veloso's 1960s output, such as his great psychedelic breakthrough single, "Alegria, Alegria." Also, there are no tracks from his highly interesting and creative period between 1984 and 1993, with great albums such as Estrangeiro and Circuladō. However, among the songs that were included are the beautiful "Terra" and "London, London" (which has lyrics in English and was written during Veloso's exile in that city) and great, catchy tunes as "Eclipse Oculto" and "Nao Enche." Among the lesser-known songs included here is the delicate "Trem Das Cores" with its beautiful lyrics. It is also worth noticing that several of the tracks are live performances. As a whole, though, this compilation should work quite well as an introduction to the magnificent work of Caetano Veloso, the greatest of all the great Brazilian musicians. ~ Philip Jandovsky
