Restored to circulation in 2007, LIVE AT SEMPER OPERA encapsulates the career of violinist Jean Luc Ponty up to that point of its original 2002 release. Ponty was one of the musicians present at the birth of jazz-rock fusion in the late 1960s. His career has been a journey from an acoustic jazz violinist (with a strong grounding in bebop and swing) to a high-voltage experimenter integrating various aspects of jazz, rock, electronics, and world music into a distinctive whole. LIVE, recorded May 2001 in Dresden, Germany, is a reflection of Ponty's artistic evolution, from the surging, dynamic "Imaginary Voyage" to the South American folk elements laced into "Caracas."
Recorded live at Semper Opera Hall, Dresden, Germany on May 25, 2001.
Personnel: Jean-Luc Ponty (electric violin); William Lecomte (keyboards); Guy Nsangué Akwa (electric bass); Thierry Arpino (drums); Moustapha Cisse (percussion).

| | Harry Allen Music From Guys And Dolls CD (2007)
Live At Semper Opera CD music
$13.15 In spite of a long successful jazz career, many of tenor saxophonist Harry Allen's recordings have been for European and Japanese labels. So it is good to see him on a mainstream American label like Arbors, where he'll get greater exposure in his homeland. Joining him for this Frank Loesser songbook consisting of 14 songs from the Broadway musical and movie Guys and Dolls are guitarist Joe Cohn, bassist Joel Forbes, and drummer Chuck Riggs, with vocalists Rebecca Kilgore and Eddie Erickson added on most tracks. Allen is a consistent swinger with a pleasing tone that sometimes makes it sound like an alto, while Cohn is a guitarist of the Jim Hall school; he can play with the best of them but he knows how to leave plenty of space and not overplay his hand. Instead of using three vocalists singing rounds in "Fugue for Tinhorns," Allen, Cohn, and Forbes take their place in an intricate arrangement. While "If I Were a Bell," "'Luck Be a Lady," and "I've Never Been in Love Before" have long been standards for jazz musicians, it is the less frequently performed numbers that merit special attention. Kilgore's subtle interpretation of "Marry the Man Today" is complemented by Allen's robust ...
| | Tammy Cochran Where I Am CD (2007)
Live At Semper Opera music CDs
$15.39 Tammy Cochran released two albums in the first half of the 2000s that got her on the charts but didn't necessarily get her noticed, so her 2007 third album, Where I Am, was designed to make her a star. Unfortunately, this means that she's been given a nearly complete country-pop makeover, something that she's professional enough to pull off yet something that's not necessarily pitched to her strengths. Cochran has a nice, rich voice -- one that has a distinct country bent to its inflections, but smooth enough to do crossover material -- and she can often distinguish herself as a singer even on lightweight songs, which isn't quite the same as making them worth singing, as Where I Am illustrates. Too often, the ballads on Where I Am -- and this is a record ...
| | Chico Hamilton Qt With Strings Attached CD (2007)
Live At Semper Opera songs
$11.19 Chico Hamilton has led a number of surprisingly innovative groups during his long career, but his recordings from the mid- to late 1950s represent some of his best work. With Strings Attached was recorded for Warner Bros in the fall of 1959, featuring the drummer's quintet with bassist Wyatt Ruther (who had previously worked with Dave Brubeck, guitarist Dennis Budimir, cellist Nathan Gershman, and newcomer Eric Dolphy, who is heard on flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax. Former cellist Fred Katz contributed arrangements and conducted the string section which augments the group on five tracks. Hamilton's band is very forward-looking for the time, while Dolphy is already shaping up as an innovative soloist (he would begin to be recognized in the near future, only to die prematurely in 1964 from undiagnosed diabetes and insulin shock). Dolphy's warm flute is prominent in the scoring of "Something to Live For," his bass clarinet (though not yet taking the great interval leaps he would later) in "Speak Low," and his adventurous alto sax in "Close Your Eyes" (which is strangely referred to as "Close to You" in the liner notes). The other soloists also shine, though it is Eric Dolphy whose star is brightest on these sessions. Long out of print on LP, the complete album was finally reissued on CD by Collectables in 2007. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Charles Glenn The Bass King CD (2007)
Live At Semper Opera album
$16.39 The man has definitely paid his dues in the record industry. The former Motown recording artist was with the popular funk group "Ozone", in the early eighties and currently is Little Richard's Bassist.Born and raised in Nashville, TN, Charles Glenn (aka King 'C') began his music career at age 16, playing in local top 40 bands. He polished and perfected his "bass playing skills and showmanship" so that he would later form his Motown group 'Ozone',where they recorded five albums and played behind many well known recording ...
