Right from the opening charge of sludge guitars and big-ass drums, it's clear that the Backyard Babies aren't there to mess around -- and they don't. The foursome sounds like they're blowing up the studio as much as recording in it, and while it's clear that Dregen's Hellacopters participation means that the two groups have a related sound, the Babies sound a little more glam/punk and a little less MC5/Stones. There's at least one Ramones shirt on display in the band photos, but there's easy echoes of the Damned ...

Like fellow supergroups Velvet Revolver and the Panic Channel, Circus Diablo draws some of its membership from the 1990s hard-rock elite, namely the Cult and Fuel. Including vocalist Billy Morrison (Camp Freddy, former bassist for the Cult), guitarist Billy Duffy (the Cult), and bassist Brett Scallions (former singer for Fuel), the Los Angeles-based band excels at no-frills guitar-driven tunes that are anchored by session drummer Matt Sorum (also of the Cult and Velvet Revolver). A showcase for Morrison's raspy voice and Duffy's blazing riffs (see the energetic anthem "Loaded"), the self-titled album hearkens back to the heyday of Guns N' Roses, L.A. Guns, and--naturally--the Cult.
The classic rock world (i.e. pre-'80s) was broadly divided into two camps -- the guitar virtuoso school, led by the likes of Eric Clapton, and the more purist R&B school, headed, of course, by Keith Richard.
