Released overseas in 2006 and in 2007 in the States, DEAD PLANET, the third album from Nick Oliveri's Mondo Generator, finds the former Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age member rocking with as much ferocity as at any point during his increasingly noteworthy career. While his former bandmate, and QOTSA main man, Josh Homme continues to expand the boundaries of his own music, adding elements of electronica, industrial, and deliberate studio sheen, Oliveri circles the wagons and opts for a more traditional loud-heavy approach. Handling almost all of the instrumental and vocal duties himself, Oliveri rips through 14 tracks (and three bonus cuts) of vicious guitar-driven rock. Hints of vintage California punk, stoner metal, and desert psych creep in here and there, but for the most part DEAD PLANET is straightforward, bare knuckle hard rock.

Dead Planet CD music
$11.59 Over the course of the years since the band's formation in the early '90s, Converge has continued to release solid hardcore-metal records that improve each time in their technicality and structure, becoming more and more experimental within a musical genre that has a reputation for being quite stagnant. When Forever Comes Crashing is the culmination of that growth -- an extremely solid, well-written, and produced album that pushes the hardcore boundaries while maintaining the ability to explode. Precise and relentess, the 11 tracks plow through heads like an unsteered bus filled with armed schizophrenics. From the first straight-up metal riff and spastic screams of "My Unsaid Everything" to the quirky buried-alive screeching of "The Lowest Common Denominator" and all the way ...

| | S C U M Gospels Of The Sick CD (2005)
Dead Planet songs
$14.05 When members of very different sounding bands get together for an all-star project, one is never sure what to expect. The members of Scum have belonged to bands ranging from Emperor (guitarist Samoth and drummer Faust) to Turbonegro (bassist Happy Tom) to Amen (lead singer Casey Chaos) to Mindgrinder (guitarist Cosmocrator). Talk about a diverse lineup! Emperor is the essence of black metal, while Turbonegro is a delightfully trashy, decadent party band whose influences have ranged from Iggy Pop to Alice Cooper to Kiss. And Amen's caustic metal/punk assault doesn't sound anything like either Emperor or Turbonegro. So what does Scum sound like? Gospels for the Sick combines a strong appreciation of old-school punk with an equally strong appreciation of thrash metal and '80s hardcore -- in other words, the raw, primal anger of the Sex Pistols, the Germs, the Dead Kennedys, and Black Flag meets the heaviness of Testament, Slayer, Exodus, Dark Angel, and early Metallica. This is nasty, harsh, brutal stuff, ...

Dead Planet CD music
$12.69 The apple doesn't fall far from the tree when it comes to guitarist Mick Turner's extracurricular activities away from his regular gig with the Aussie indie mainstays the Dirty Three. Much of Blue Trees, a cobbling together of compilation tracks, out of print singles and previously unreleased material sounds just a violin overdub from being genuine D3 compositions — especially since the band's drummer Jim ...
