| | Bachata #1'S CD
Released in 2007, this 12-track collection presents hits in the Dominican-rooted bachata style. Among the artists featured are Aventura, Monchy & Alexandra, and Xtreme, with Aventura's light, lilting "Obsesion" and Xtreme's R&B-tinged "Te Extrano" proving to be two of the compilation's highlights. With its gentle percussion and romantic themes, these songs are perfect for quieter moments on the dance floor. Bachata #1'S Review

| | Van Der Graaf Generator Real Time: Royal Festival Hall CDs (2007) (Import) Japan
Bachata #1'S
$22.85 Van der Graaf Generator: Peter Hammill (guitar); David Jackson (flute); Hugh Banton (organ); Guy Evans (drums). Although they never achieved the rock-star status of prog peers like Yes and Genesis in the U.S., Manchester band Van Der Graaf Generator were quite popular in Italy. This live, double-CD set captures a fantastic reunion concert from 2005, recorded at the Royal Festival Hall. The evening's setlist includes songs from every period of the band's existence. Van der Graaf Generator went through a number of lineups in its eventful life, most of which went by undocumented as live units, at least officially (and even on the bootleg front, VDGG fans have few quality recordings to fall back on). There has been one official live album, Vital, but, as necessary as it was in chronicling the group's transformation into a ferocious stage beast, it features a short-lived incarnation of the band. All in all, what is largely considered the "classic quartet" lineup was never decently recorded on-stage, and would never be. At least, that was the story up until May 6, 2005, when Hugh Banton, David Jackson, Guy Evans and Peter Hammill walked on-stage together for the first time in almost 30 years. Recently re-formed, VDGG had released a new studio album (the more-than-decent Present) and a European tour had been booked. The quartet would get better, meaner and wilder with every show (as bootlegs testify), but the one show that mattered, the one that had to be recorded for posterity (righting the aforementioned wrong in the process) was that historical first reunion at London's Royal Festival Hall, in front of a sold-out and very international house. Nostalgia was in the air, of course, and it soon became clear that this first reunion tour would be about giving old neglected fans what they wanted and letting younger ...
| | Mitch Ryder Detroit-Memphis Experiment CD (1969)
Bachata #1'S
$19.25 Originally released in 1969 on the Dot label this album finds the Detroit rock legend heading South to kick out the jams with Memphis soul/r&b legends, Booker T & The MGs. Produced by Steve Cropper and featuring such classics as I Get Hot and Raise Your
Personnel: Mitch Ryder (vocals); Steve Cropper (guitar); Booker T. Jones (keyboards); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Audio Remixer: Steve Cropper. Liner Note Authors: Christian Ernst Graf; Steve Cropper. Photographer: Beverly Parker. Mitch Ryder's voice is in great shape as Steve Cropper takes over the production reigns from industry legend Bob Crewe. There are more than a few digs at Ryder's past in the liner notes, but the music is truly the voice from Detroit meeting the sound of Memphis. The 12 songs here are statements, all clocking in under four minutes and above two and a half. These compact tunes like "I Get Hot" and the Cropper/Levise original "Long Long Time" -- not the Linda Ronstadt hit -- have Ryder/Levise pouring his well-known voice all over the grooves. "Boredom" is the strangest, and prettiest, song in the lot, written by Matthew Fisher, Gary Brooker and Keith Reid of Procul Harum bringing a British progressive pop sound to this rhythm and blues album, to good effect. Island vibes pervade this departure from the expected Mitch Ryder as well as Booker T sound. It's a delight. "Push Aroun'" would be fine for Wilson Pickett but it sounds like early Lou Reed circa Cycle Annie, Ryder's voice smoother than usual, with super little ...
