With the release of the electric "Justify My Love," Madonna (or her record label) had perfected the art of the CD maxi-single, issuing a record with four distinct mixes, each different from the other and sometimes seeming to be completely different songs. The "Orbit 12" Mix (mixed by William Orbit) is a groovier version than the original (which is the first mix on this disc), and brings Lenny Kravitz's background vocals to the forefront. The hip-hop mix (track three) utilizes horns and has additional explicit lyrics and vocals, almost making one feel as if one is winding down in a New York after-hours hip-hop club at 4 a.m. The fifth mix ("The Beast Within Mix") is completely different from the others, almost sounding like a totally different song (which could have been titled "The Beast Within"). Complete with Eastern influences (which would later resurface on the song "Erotica") and totally different lyrics, this mix brings a much more sinister edge to an already dark, seductive ...

After 1973's MOTT, a loosely structured concept album about life in a rock & roll band, the only obvious choice for a follow-up was 1974's THE HOOPLE, a loosely structured concept album about the overall state of rock & roll in the mid-'70s. Opening with "The Golden Age of Rock and Roll," a half-serious, half-satiric look at rock & roll's past, the album continues with the darkly cynical "Marionette," and a pair of classics about teenage life, the sympathetic "Born Late '58" and the proto-punk "Crash Street Kids." The last of these makes obvious the Clash's debt to Mott the Hoople (Clash guitarist Mick Jones was an enormous Mott fan, and lobbied for the band's producer, Guy Stevens, to come out of retirement to produce their classic LONDON CALLING in 1979). THE HOOPLE is a snapshot of the mid-'70s rock & roll scene that foreshadows the impending rise of punk.

Black Flag's early years were tumultuous: three years, three singles, three lead singers. The frontman this time is Dez Cadena, who later spent a brief period in Redd Kross. Harsher-sounding than his immediate predecessors, Chavo and Keith Morris, but more melodic than his declamatory replacement Henry Rollins, Cadena is something akin to a hardcore version of FUN HOUSE-era Iggy Pop. The title track is one of guitarist Greg Ginn's funniest odes to suburban teenage life, but the EP's other two songs, the slash-and-burn "I've Heard It Before" and "American Waste," point toward the more serious themes of the band's first full-length album, 1981's DAMAGED.

Around the time of UNKLE's second album, another Mo' Wax outfit of the past (though one with a far smaller profile) released their own sophomore record, one in similar company -- but far superior to -- UNKLE's work. Songs for Creatures, the duo's production debut after a 1998 Mo' Wax mix album, finds Psychonauts creating efficient, highly artistic productions that develop slowly and allow the several guest vocalists room to explore their own performances. The opener, "Circles," unfolds with all the soul groove of a classic Donny Hathaway performance, but Psychonauts aren't delivering a simple twist on the earthy Mo' Wax sound. Far more wide-ranging, Songs for Creatures is a primer on classic British music of the past two decades: vocalist Chancer gives "Life's Swift Charger" the wasted charm of classic Underworld, "Hot Blood" is a next-generation ringer for the Cure (with much more flair than the Rapture), and "Hips for Scotland" is a vehicle for the breathy Ian Brown mannerisms of young singer James Yorkston.
