| | Looking For Thread, A Needle Got Lost CD Cintron, Eduardo CDS
Eduardo’s classical music debut Looking for Thread, A Needle Got Lost is both pensive and bold. Listeners expecting to sit back, relax and sip their cup of tea or coffee while listening to this powerful medley of songs will be shaken and mistaken. Instead they will find a maelstrom of emotions and robust stringed modulations. The cello and piano are showcased on several of the pieces and set against woven landscapes of violins, brass and woodwinds. The open-ended, minimalist and syncopated melodies take the listener on an exotic odyssey of longing and cathartic introspection, while powerful rhythms anchor the pieces and listeners to earth and soul. Pensive and brooding stringed solos, like the one in The Dreamer’s Walk, are contrasted by vast symphonic overtures.Eduardo’s free, yet well-framed style is his undaunted experimentation and exploration. The seventh and eighth tracks, for example, are a study of variations on a single theme. The counterpointed tracks begin with the sultry piano solo of Evento De Nieve 1 that cuts the silence like a massive plough moving through a placid field of grass. Evento De Nieve 2 takes the energy of its brighter twin on a detour into a dark and brooding musical tale. The pairing of musical events continues in the final piece Hope, where the climax and coda of the album come together in a flurry of violins, brass and woodwinds. The unconventional format of the composition and emotional empathy that Looking for Thread, A Needle Got Lost is able to conjure leaves the listener buzzing long after the final piece comes to a close. $14.79 Mooke brings classic inspiration together with technology on her five-string viola. Very enchanting. She gives a new, magical voice to this often misunderstood instrument. This deserves a five-point catgut pentagon. ~ Tom Schulte
"Mooke shows off both an impressive dynamic range and a drop-dead-gorgeous tone on her custom five-string electric viola. In her hands, the instrument can sound like a keyboard synthesizer, a guitar, or even a saxophone. ... she seems to be able to translate almost any musical impulse into sound."- Alternative PressMartha Mooke is a pioneer in the field of the electric five string viola. She has developed a unique musical voice by synthesizing her classical music training with extended techniques, digital effects processing and improvisation, while retaining the depth and soul of the instrument. Besides her catalog of works for solo and ensemble electric strings, she has composed music for theater and ballet and served as Music Director for national and international events. Looking For Thread, A Needle Got Lost
$18.99 The two guitar concerti by Ernesto Cordero and Carlos Alberto Vázquez, both composers from Puerto Rico, share the title of Concierto Festivo by pure and happy coincidence. Perhaps the festive nature of the Puerto Rican culture and the other Spanish-speaking Caribbean islands —like Cuba and the Dominican Republic— is the common denominator for these two, beautifully conceived and inspired works that are, nevertheless, well distinct one from the other. The cultural heritage of such rich islands is truly cross-cultural. It combines influences of the Spanish Renaissance and the Andalusian spirit which, in the New World, merged with other influences —including the pre-Colombian and the African—, and which contribute to the region's special identity, well reflected in its arts and music.Ernesto Cordero, born in 1946, has composed a vast musical literature for various media, including symphonic and chamber music. He has written, to this date, seven concerti, four of them for guitar and orchestra, one for the Puerto Rican cuatro, one for flute and one for violin and orchestra. Cordero is also an accomplished guitarist, having devoted his more recent years to composition, after having had great success in his guitar recital at the Carnegie Recital Hall in 1978. He has been affiliated to the University of Puerto Rico, since 1971, as Professor of its Department of Music.Cordero’s Concierto Festivo for guitar and string orchestra is his most recent work. Written in 2003, it was commissioned by the University of Puerto Rico to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of its foundation and the re-opening of its Theater. The concerto has three movements, written in a modal and neo-Romantic style, in which the contrapuntal elements of the Spanish Renaissance combine with contemporary harmonies, providing it with the signature flavor that is present in most of his works. As in his previous concerti, Afro-Antillean influences occasionally appear in this composition, with their rich, sumptuous rhythms. Ernesto Cordero explores, creatively, the sonorous resources of the guitar, offering ...
