The first album by Necrophagist, 1999's Onset of Putrefaction, was actually a completely solo recording made by Turkish guitar prodigy Muhammed Suicmez, who also handled the vocals, bass guitar, and drum programming. Slowly but steadily, that album became legendary in the death metal underground for its over-the-top technical excess and death-defying guitar heroics. As a result of that notoriety, Suicmez was able to put together a full four-piece band of live musicians with enough skill and endurance to play his difficult, fast, and intricate compositions. Epitaph is the first album by this full lineup, and as expected, it features an almost nonstop assault of complex, technical death metal with an emphasis on Suicmez's lead guitar. As Lil Jon was to the crunk movement centered around Atlanta, so Keak da Sneak is to the hyphy scene in California's East Bay. That sounds like an oversimplification, but it's a comparison that works on every level. Keak da Sneak has been one of the mainstays of Oakland's hip-hop scene since the late '90s, slowly developing a signature sound of minimalist, grinding beats built mostly from thumping beatboxes and all-low-end synths. Just as Lil Jon coined (or at the very least popularized) the term "crunk" and almost single-handedly invented the musical style associated with it, Keak da Sneak is credited with creating the term "hyphy" (a multi-purpose word covering a wide variety of outlandish behaviors) and has shepherded just about every artist who has used the term. "Those into droning ambient, both dark and ethereal, should be well acquainted with Mathias Josefson's creature by now, given the amazing quality of his releases on Cold Meat Industry, Eibon, Segerhuva, Fin de Siècle, Mystery Sea etc. This new full-length work is released on high-quality, you-wouldn't-tell-it's-a cdr by Ben Fleury Steiner's Gears of Sand imprint, which makes perfect sense, as both artists have deeply investigated the potential of guitar-generated soundscapes. Unlike many of MP's recent releases, which incorporated lots of manipulated field recordings and even voices, this is a pure guitar drone work. Think of vast drones and tones of resonating strings, probably played with an ebow and filtered with an array of pedals. As simple as that, but less is more in this case, as the four tracks have a constant intensity and quality which is often lacking in releases of this genre.
