By 1967's PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD., the band had found a balance between writing and performing their own material, and utilizing the talents of their Los Angeles songwriting teams and studio musicians. The result is an artistically satisfying mix of progressive experimentalism and pop smarts; the Moog synthesizer on the tracks "Daily Nightly," "Love Is Only Sleeping," and the groupie anthem "Star Collector," was the first ever to appear on a pop album.
Besides the enormous hit "Pleasant Valley Sunday," highlights include the simply beautiful jazz-pop of Michael Nesmith's "Don't Call On Me," and the atmospheric and lovely "Words," featuring Peter Tork's best-ever vocals. The entire album is superb, and the handful of alternate takes and outtakes are nearly its equal. A '60s pop classic.

Q (5/95, p.127) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...shows the prefab four aware of their limitations as a band and allowing some sessionmen back into the studio for a minor pop psychedelic masterpiece..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t reveals both Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith as highly individual vocalists, the latter a ringer for Stephen Stills on his country-rock tunes." | Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones LTD. Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) THE PRE - FAB FOUR SHINE After the Monkees had a crack at writing and playing (most) of the instruments themselves on the well received Headquarters it was business as usual for this smartly titled follow up.
The results were, suprisingly, excellent and this is without doubt the finest and most consistent Monkees record ever produced. She Hangs Out, Door Into Summer and Star Collector may sound of there time but are still great songs delivered with gusto and style.
Pleasant Valley Sunday was a magnificent Goffin & King single and Nesmiths own What Am I Doing Hanging Round is perhaps his best song.
Musically this is Tork and Nesmith's baby but Micky Dolenz is also vocally on top form and Jones throws in a couple of decent self penned originals.
The record did well on both sides of the Atlantic but the public weren't really interested in a more hybrow and savvy Monkees. They could get all their navel gazing and artiness from the then tripped out Beatles. In the wake of Revolver and Sgt Pepper the Monkees began to lose momentum and, the wondeful Daydream Believer aside, there audience moved on.

The best Monkees album ever This is the best Monkees album they ever made by far, and once again, the folks at Rhino have outdone themselves. The only slight complaint that I have is that the mixes of "Goin' Down," "Daily Nightly," and "Star Collector" from the 1994 reissue were not included on this new version. Other than that, great job, Rhino, and looking forward to the rest of the reissues, including the rare mono versions of "The Birds, the Bees, and the Monkees" and the HEAD soundtrack. Not A Horror Scope at all... Their 4th album is a gem & is superior to Headquaters. This has the classic's Cuddly Toy about a Bikey gang bang,Words,What Am I Doing Hangin' Round,Star Collector & a song about the California riots but my favorite is Nesmith's Love Is Ony Sleeping. both Mono & Stereo with lots of remixes. A Must for Monkee fans or someone discovering their music.By the
way, The Birds,The Bees & The Monkees
which was the next release...was originaly going ot be a double LP. Submitted by wayneforbes (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
