Best film to watch over and over I've viewed this film many times and it never fails to intrigue me! Honestly, I don't know of anyone more suited for the role of Elizabeth as Cate Blanchett. This isn't your avergae "historical" film, that incoporates false pretenses to make the story appealing, like Titanic. The director just searched for the perfect story, and managed to captivate his audience while accurately documenting history. This film deserves all the awards in the world! a bold interpretation A slightly overlooked film of 1998 that profiled and jettisoned Cate Blanchett into the star she would obliviously become. Dynamic and fantastical roles such as this and Galadriel (of course of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) are the ones she is fit do excel in. She's been in other 'street reality' roles and those movies do not cater to her potential. Director Shekhar in additon did a wonderful job bringing out her performance as Elizabeth I.
A lot has been said about the historical accuracy of the movie. The movie would've insulted the intelligence of a lot of audiences had it tried to be an infallible translation. Movies that attempt to be a true documentorial journal often fail the attention of the audience. I'm sure Mel Gibson's Braveheart would've suffered greatly had it been historically compliant. What the film does do is mince fact with situational conjecture with entertaining results.
I found the cast overall to be well within reason of what the film was looking for. While Kathy Burke's portrayal of Mary Tudor might've raised the eyebrows of some, I believe it was a necessary element to help set the stage for her and Elizabeth's 'confrontation'. Vincent Kasssel's Duc d'Anjou was a comical and engaging personality.
Obviously apparent are all the visuals such as costumes, sets and an underscored detail to sound as well. A lot has been said of all of those aspects and they are merited. Shekhar Kapur had a style and vision for this film and it really shows onscreen.
The DVD comes with the congratulatory few extras and I liked Shekhar's commentary. It may dispel a few assumptions made by the casual movie-goer on his intentions for the project. I may have given the DVD four stars, but it would not have reflected the experience and honest effort put in.

Elizabeth video
$9.69 Nearly a decade after Cate Blanchett drew the attention of audiences and critics alike with ELIZABETH, the Oscar-winning actress returns to the role of the Virgin Queen. Though the protestant ruler has been on the throne for decades in 1585, Elizabeth I's reign is still under attack from both inside her country and from the continent. Her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton), carries the favor of the nation's Catholics as she schemes for the throne from prison, while Spain's King Philip II (Jordi Molla) plots an invasion with the power of his famous armada. But Elizabeth is also concerned with the arrival of Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), a charming pirate and adventurer. Unable to reconcile her feelings with her crown, she encourages Bess (Abbie Cornish), her beloved lady-in-waiting, to pursue a relationship with Raleigh.
Nine years haven't dulled Blanchett's ability to play this--or any other--character with an impressive range of fire and tenderness. Her chemistry with the infinitely watchable Owen is one of the film's highlights. As in ELIZABETH, director Shekhar Kapur doesn't restrict himself from using artfully constructed shots that aren't normally used in period dramas. It's a modern retelling of history, and Kapur and his director of photograpy, Remi Adefarasin, aren't content to let the film have the standard look of many films in the genre. Costume designer Alexandra Byrne follows the same logic, creating stunning dresses for Elizabeth that draw inspiration both from modernity and the time period. If Blanchett weren't such a gifted actress, the gorgeous costumes might threaten to overtake her as the star of the film.
Cate Blanchett reprises her role as Queen Elizabeth in the $16.3 million-grossing film, which also stars Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen. Bonuses: deleted scenes, featurettes, commentary.
| | Brooke Ellison Story DVD (2005) Widescreen
Elizabeth film
$9.79 Based on the true life story of Brooke Ellison, this moving drama was directed for A&E by Christopher Reeve, and was the last film he made before his tragic and untimely death. Lacey Chabert (MEAN GIRLS) stars as the title character, who at the age of 11 was hit by a car, an accident that would change the life of the previously active child. Suffering severe head trauma and an injury to her spinal cord, Lacey was not expected to survive, yet she emerged from the hospital triumphant and determined to live a life that was as close to normal as possible. Returning to school, Lacey was accompanied every day by her mother, Jean (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, THE PERFECT STORM, MY LIFE SO FAR), who attended classes with her daughter throughout her accomplished academic career. Lacey ultimately graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, and delivered a heart wrenching and inspiring speech to commemorate the occasion. This is a warm family saga about the strength of the mother-daughter bond, and the power of courage and determination in the face of adversity.
Based on a true story, Brooke Ellison became a quadriplegic at age 11, but, with determination and the support of her family, rose above her disability and went on to graduate from Harvard University. Christopher Reeve directs this film starring Lacey Chabert, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and John Slattery.
| | Single White Female/Single White Female 2: The Psycho 2-Pack DVDs (1992)
Elizabeth review
$15.69 SINGLE WHITE FEMALE: Traumatized by the discovery that her live-in fiancé has cheated on her with his ex-wife, Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) decides to find a roommate to share her apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. After interviewing candidates, beautiful, sophisticated career woman Allison settles on Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a shy, mousy woman with a hopeless fashion sense, and, seemingly, a heart of gold. At first she's an ideal roommate, asking Allison for advice and attempting to emulate her cosmopolitan style. But Hedy's adulation grows more and more disturbing as Allison realizes that her new roommate has a dark side. Barbet Schroeder (BARFLY, REVERSAL OF FORTUNE) directed this taut psychological thriller. Jason Leigh is mesmerizing as the disturbed Hedy, and Fonda is well cast as the unwitting victim of another's psychosis.
SINGLE WHITE FEMALE 2: Following the successful scare tactics of the original, this horror outing sees a young woman (Holly Parker, THAT'S MY BUSH) moving in with a seemingly normal new roommate, Tess (Allison Lange, GACY). Unbeknownst to her unwitting tenant, however, Tess is an Angel of Mercy who makes the rounds, killing off those she deems in need. Unfortunately, Tess is also losing her ability to discern who those people are, and begins turning her "merciful" attentions on her friends.
