Blues axe slinger Robben Ford is known for his biting six-string antics, yet albums such as 2007's TRUTH reveal a musician who's interested in much more than your run-of-the-mill blues-rock. On TRUTH, Ford mixes jazz, R&B, and pop with more traditional blues elements, creating a smooth, agreeable blend that still features plenty of Ford's guitar wizardry. The set list is comprised of both originals and covers (of Paul Simon and Otis Redding tunes), and there are instances of pure blues grooves, such as on the impressive opener, "Lateral Climb."
Personnel: Robben Ford (guitars); Dave 'Woody' Woodfrod (tenor saxophone); Dave 'Woody' Woodford (baritone saxophone); Dave Fornero (trumpet); Bernie Worrell (Wurlitzer piano); Jeff Babko, Larry Goldings (Hammond b-3 organ); Jimmy Earl, Will Lee , Chris Chaney (bass guitar); Toss Panos, Gary Novak, Charley Drayton (drums); Ken Stacey, Siedah Garrett (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Susan Tedeschi (vocals).
Uncut (p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Lyrics about the Iraq war and American hubris are married to tough, uncompromising licks, with a couple of more tender moments on the lovely tribute 'Riley B King'...." Dirty Linen (p.81) - "Tight arrangements, tasty playing, and interesting songs make TRUTH an above-the-norm blues outing for ROBBEN FORD." Living Blues (p.38) - "Few blues guitarists have a tone as sweet as Robben Ford's, and even fewer approach their music with his sophistication." No Depression (p.108) - "Ford displays some grit....[He] has something to say about the everyday hassles that fuel the blues' most baroque daydreams." Truth Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Low-Fi Recording This is one of the crudest sounding productions I've ever heard from Robben Ford. The music is fine but the sound engineering is the worst. Garage band quality. Robben deserves better than this. I'm surprised he even released this. I find it hard to enjoy this cd because the sound is so bad. There is too much high end on the vocals and the drums sound like crap. It's a very thin and harsh sound overall. Robben has been going for a more basic sound on the last few cds but this is a little too raw for a professional recording. Blue Moon is a much better sounding record. Truth also features no instrumentals. I'm a little disappointed with this release. Submitted by ittonihf (Syracuse, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

strong rebound I might have agreed with you a forgettable album or two ago, but this effort shines as a pleasant throwback to the Robben of old...critique the voice or lyrics and you may have a point, but if you longed to hear Robben's guitar work bring you back to the early 90's, you'll smile through nearly every track....nice to see an old favorite bounce back with a solid record, if you're a longtime fan you can buy this without a preview listen, it's that good... Not his best Robben's voice is great and his song writing has improved. For me, the problem lies in his guitar. Robben is known for his tone, and on "Truth" his solo guitar sounds too bright, harsh, and he uses way too much reverb.
His solos sound a little uninspired as well.
Nice songs, but disappointing guitar, which is what Robben is known for. And it's too bad because this CD COULD have been his best. Submitted by gseawil (Sacramento, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Robben Ford Keep On Running CD (2003)
Truth
$8.69 On his second album for the Concord Jazz label, guitarist Robben Ford stays pretty much to the formula of Blue Moon from 2001. He concentrates on playing, singing, and covering great songs (and even writes a few) with interesting arrangements, inspired solos, and crisp, clean production that lets the song shine through the players. Much has been made of Ford's eclecticism and that is reflected in his choice of material here, though he never strays from the blues or R&B into jazz or fusion. Ford's selection of session players reflects his divergent interests as well: Edgar Winter appears on saxophone, ...

| | Derek Trucks Songlines CD (2006)
Truth
$11.39 This is, perhaps, the one. Derek Trucks has been on an aesthetic quest for something since he began his own recording career in 1997 -- apart from his membership in the Allman Brothers Band. Each record has gone further into establishing Trucks not only as a slide guitar wizard (that happened when he was still in his teens), but also as a serious songwriter, fine arranger, and bandleader. ...

| | Robert Palmer Best Of Both Worlds: Anthology (1974-2001) CDs (2002)
Truth
$21.95 Recorded between 1974 and 2001. Includes liner notes by Scott Schinder.
Those who only associate Robert Palmer with singing "Addicted to Love" in the 1980s in front of black-clad models do both Palmer and themselves a great disservice. In fact, from the '70s on, Palmer credibly covered everyone from the Meters to Gary Numan, and successfully tackled blues, soul, reggae, rock, R&B, and even calypso. The British singer's smooth-yet-soulful voice was a rare and precious thing, and his knack for selecting material was peerless.
Perhaps most important to his career was an uncanny ability to adapt to changing times and musical movements, something made exceedingly clear over the course of the two-disc BEST OF BOTH WORLDS compilation. Hearing Palmer lend his unique tone to Toots & the Maytals' "Pressure Dro

Truth
$13.59 For her third album (the second with a wider distribution), Raiatea returns with a somewhat more traditional set than her previous, excellent affair (Sweet & Lovely). Primarily, this means a lot more falsetto singing, and somewhat more simplistic guitar strumming as accompaniment. That's not to say that she doesn't still sound great, of course. While Raiatea has matured vocally, she tends to spend more time in the falsetto range, where she does an excellent job, but one can only bemoan the loss of more time that could have been spent in her natural (read: non-falsetto) voice. Instrumentally, her sense of harmony has developed further, putting the guitar to good use to accompany herself, and pulling out some big guns for guest artist roles (Robert ...
