The title is a joking reference to the messianic anticipation that built up in the years between the Manchester, England rock band's 1989 debut--which Britain's New Musical Express magazine ranked as the greatest album of the '80s--and this 1995 follow-up. Smartly slipcased, this two-CD package rounds up the last will and testament of the Mark Three incarnation of Deep Purple -- that is, the David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes fired lineup that ended with Ritchie Blackmore's departure to form Rainbow in 1975. Released in 2002 as a stop-gap following former bassist Roger Glover's late-'90s remastering of the earlier Deep Purple albums, but before he agreed to supervise similar restorations of the later discs, it is a utilitarian offering. There are no bonus tracks, despite there being a number to choose from, and the actual packaging offers no variation on the existing single discs. Cheb Nacim, not really known in the same league as the other current stars of rai (such as Cheb Mami) or even the slightly older generation (Faudel, Cheb Hasni, Rachid Taha), still packs a punch on this, what would appear to be his first album on the world market. The style is musically complex, eschewing the pure keyboard and string power of much rai and ignoring some of the rock-based punches of the more modern, rebellious end of the genre as well.
