The 2006 release from Colombian salsa king Alberto Barros, Titan de la Salsa, finds the composer/trombonist continuing his mix of gentle rhythm piano, a hot brass section, and subtle percussion in eight new tracks. "Menéate," the album's opener, is a fun, catchy song, with crisp Latin beats, an electric bass, and a short trumpet break. Barros enjoys letting the individual elements of the band take the forefront, but he does this without much use of soloing (there is the occasional brass riff that takes off for a few seconds, but that's about all), instead choosing to cut out or lower certain instruments and sounds in order to let others come through. This creates a very clean, smooth feel to the music, with its strength and passion lying in its nuance rather than in its volume. Some of the songs are clearly influenced by pop (Barros has worked with Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony as well as contemporary salsa staples Tito Nieves and Obie Bermúdez), especially in the melodies, but it doesn't take away from the overall groove of the work. Anything that may have been lost vocally in the unfortunately bland "Ay Como Duele" is made up for in songs like "Como Tu No Hay Dos," where the singer sounds especially plaintive, affecting an almost flamenco-esque wail as he sings about his beloved. The songs' lyrics all deal with love and its many forms, but not always in the standard way. Most interesting are "Borrón y Cuenta Nueva," one of the slower tracks on the album, which has the singer asking for forgiveness (the title translates roughly to "let bygones be bygones"), accented by jazz-influenced trumpet solo, and "Aun Mi Corazon," which, despite the almost onomatopoeic chorus of "late, late, late por ella," comes across as sincere, and the passion which drives both the singer's heart and the band is palpable. Barros is a talented musician, and Titan de la Salsa is just more proof of that: the beat is quick and steady, the band is tight, the emotion is felt. It's a great salsa album. ~ Marisa Brown

| | Xavier Cugat Latin Rhythms For Dancing CD (2002)
Titan De La Salsa CD music
$7.15 Recorded between 1941 & 1955. Includes liner notes by Joe Conzo.
The man who helped to invent Latin dance music, the Spanish-born icon was an active musical force for eight decades, playing a diverse array of styles, from the mambo to the tango. LATIN RHYTHMS FOR DANCING is a starter couse of Cugat's music, and includes ten infectious tracks.
Xavier Cugat had a recording career that stretched over many more years than are covered on this collection. But this single-disc, 26-song anthology of sides from the 1940s and 1950s has to be considered the best collection of his work. This was Cugat's prime, and the tracks boast better fidelity than those he made prior to 1940, if one considers his prime to have started earlier. Hearing these lively and exceptionally well-performed, pioneering blends of Latin, jazz, and pop music, one is surprised that Cugat has not gotten more ...

| | Poison Idea Blank Blackout Vacant CD (1992) Reissue
Titan De La Salsa songs
$10.19 All songs written by members of Poison Idea except "Vietnamese Baby" (Johansen).
Though not quite the shotgun blast of an album that its predecessor, Feel the Darkness, was, Blank Blackout Vacant is nonetheless an ample testimony to Poison Idea's unbridled power and force. Suffused with enough hate, pain, and rage to fuel an entire army, Jerry A.'s vocals, positively dripping with bile and venom, certainly cement his ideas with passion and force. "Understated" ...

Titan De La Salsa songs
$12.35 King Selewa, a musician having made the journey (both physical and musical) from Africa to Jamaica and finally to Trinidad, presents here a fine collection of simple, happy calypso in the pre-steelband form. The instrumentation is based around the guitar and drums (with a horn section here and there), the vocals are repetitive and catchy, and the mood is light. There's somewhat less of the political commentary common to some of the ...
