| | Reggae: Seriously Good Music CD - Import
Chris Murphy, ex-INXS manager, founded his Petrol Records in 2001, and after a good deal of iTunes success with an assortment of international salsa and reggaeton tracks, signed a distribution agreement with EMI, releasing on disc a series of themed samplers, including this one, which presents a dozen contemporary reggae tracks. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot here to e-mail home about, and even the best cuts, like Sugar Minott's "King of Kings," are only moderately interesting. The lead track, Noiseshaper's version of Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting," will probably draw the most attention, but the decision to slow the song down and tackle it at half speed probably wasn't a good one, since it robs the song of its quirky verve and forces the lyrics to carry far more than ever intended. ~ Steve Leggett Reggae: Seriously Good Music Music Reggae: Seriously Good Music Songs | 1. | Kung Fu Fighting - Noiseshaper/Carl Douglas |

| | Def Jamaica CD (2003)
Reggae: Seriously Good Music
$12.65 This compilation highlights a musical form that has been a shot in the arm for the ailing U.S. hip-hop collective. Beset by warmed-over gangsta-style imagery and threadbare production values, the industry came up with a winning formula in the combination of hip-hop and Jamaican dancehall, a perky amalgam of bossa-nova beats, reggae, and old-school toasting that had been popular almost everywhere but the U.S. since the mid-1980s.
DEF JAMAICA features established American artists such as Cam'ron, Shawnna, and Juelz Santana on infectious cuts spiced up with insistent ubiquitous dancehall beats. On the triumphant (and wildly popular) "Dude," Ms. Thing gets sultry in Indian style with Shawnna, ...
