Italian label Mediane has released some great compilations over the years. This intoxicating 2007 offering bundles bouncy early-1960s pop songs from Italian artists mostly unknown outside of their era and country. It's tempting to look at a collection like this as a novelty--but the smooth Italian accents superimposed on typically American song forms wavers between kitschy and impressively artful. Highlights include an extremely rockin' jump-blues number from Italy's "swing king" Natalino Otto, and the soulful unto tears, James Brownian cover of "Portami Tante Rose," by Italian rock group I Camaleonti.
