South Carolina's Nile have done a nice job setting themselves apart from the extreme metal pack. For 14 years and counting, the group has carried on its tradition of technical musicianship suited with unique lyrics inspired by an odd obsession with ancient Egyptian culture, history, and mythology. It's an odd combination, but it works. And ITHYPHALLIC (their fifth full-length, and first for Nuclear Blast) is a representative heap of the band's savagely good thinking-man's death metal.

this cd is by far the best in death metal.i own aotw and i thought that was as heavy as it could get til i got this. the production is so good u can almost hear every note they play so u can understand the complexity. its amazing by far the greatest to date.

nothing short of amazing.
ithyphallic in my opinion is their second best album, id still put annihilation of the wicked ahead of this. BUT, thats not taking anything away from this record or any others prior to annihilation. this is still a record of the year candidate in its entirety. TRUE death metal lovers, buy this.

Buy this CD if you have any balls. It's the best Nile, a classic like old Morbid Angel. One of the heaviest bands around.

I'm a fan of almost all Extreme Metal. I'm a fan of Death Metal but not a huge one. To me a lot of bands sound alike these days. This band, Nile, is so much different. They have their own sound and only Nile sounds like that. This is my first Nile record and i'm addicted to it, I just got this 2 days ago and i've listened to this so many times. It's classic. Karls vox are typical Death Metal vox bu there's something a bout them that makes them unique and I can't place. George's drums are among the most technical in all of Metal. Dallas' guitars are great and he lays down impressive back-up vox. I love the sounds of the two guitars on this album. The technicality is amazing and this album contais soon to be classics. My favorite tracks are As He Creates He Destroys, Ithyphallic, Papyrus Containig The Spell To Protect It's Possesser Against Attacks From He Who Is In The Water, The Essential Salts, and Even The Gods Must Die. All the tracks are great and this is a must for any Metal fan.

Just when I was craving more out of death metal stables, this beast is unleashed. The production's awesome, its got the Ithyphallic feel like every Nile album. What really sets this one apart are the meaty riffs n superb lyrics, n u just can't have enough of it. Loved it ...

As time goes on, heavy metal continues to get more and more extreme. No, not the "stuff" you hear on the radio or see on MTV that tries to pass itself as metal, but the music that is bubbling under in the metal underground. Nile is one such band that continues to push metal's boundaries to the limits, as it does on its 2005 release Annihilation of the Wicked (produced by Neil Kernon of Queensrÿche fame). Obviously judging from its name and song titles, the group has a thing for Middle Eastern imagery, and the album starts off with sounds straight out of the desert, "Dusk Falls Upon the Temple of the Serpent on the Mount of Sunrise." But there is nothing that could possibly prepare you for what is lurking around the corner, as perhaps "a metallic head-on collision" is a fitting description for the machine gun-like "Cast Down the Heretic." Guitarist Karl Sanders continues to make a valid argument that he is one of the top guitarists of the extreme metal genre throughout the album, as he has no problem keeping pace with the rapid-fire drums. If you're not well versed with this style of metal, the songs on Annihilation of the Wicked may start to blend into one another after a while, but extreme metal fans will be writhing in ecstasy. ~ Greg Prato
