The Brazilian mandolin master follows his masterful quintet date Brasilianos with a more intimate (hence the title) and plucky solo affair on the ten-string mandolin that he says uses "road technology"--that is, a good mike, his laptop, and an MBox. Rhythmically diverse and intricately rendered, the session sounds like a one-take affair, with him not worrying so much about arrangements but just letting songs from his favorite Brazilian composers work through him as if by an unconscious process. He gets off to a lovely, hypnotic start with the passionately rhythmic "Samba do Soho," focusing on pure, crisp fingerstyling as he conveys the joy intended by writers Paulo Jobim and Ronaldo Bastos. De Holanda is in more of a thoughtful mode on Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo's "Beatriz" and his own simple expression of "Gratitude," which he follows with the strumming grace of Tom Jobim's "Luiza." De Holanda's other originals, "A César o Que é de César" and the graceful "Amor, Saudade Amor," stand up well with the works of the other composers. Because each song has a similar tempo, the collection is best enjoyed as a seamless whole. From the get-go, his goal seems to be fully expressing the melodic, "vocal," and rhythmic capabilities of the instrument he has such a passion for. Realizing this, he fully conveys a genius for both interpretation and listening to the musical spirits of his native Brazil. ~ Jonathan Widran
I intended to record this cd on the road using technology which favors music ( a good microphone, my laptop and an M-Box). The concept has to do with a place where our souls can experience the quietness and restfulness-and for me this is that soundtrack. It's not a mandolin exercize or practice, but simply the enjoyment of playing.There are no arrangement, just songs that live in my unconscious. The original release of Again! in 1975 was a reunion of sorts for Trinidad's Slinger Francisco (known to most of the world as Mighty Sparrow) and Jamaica's Byron Lee, who had first marketed themselves together on 1967's Only a Fool. Marketed is the right word here, since the two don't really collaborate but sort of do their respective things side by side, and with their vastly differing approaches -- Sparrow is a modern calypso singer with an occasional barbed tongue while Lee & His Dragonaires specialize in soft, string-laden pop ballad fare with just enough Caribbean lilt to keep the tourists happy -- these two artists don't necessarily fit together well. Sparrow's tracks (he uses his own musicians on them), which include "Dragon Dance," "Obeah Wedding," and "No Kind of Man at All," have a kind of good-time dance energy and feature an engaging calypso lingo that makes each of them feel like they're done with a wink of the eye and a tongue half in cheek. Lee's tracks, on the other hand, which include a cover of Bread's "If" and a surprisingly lame elevator version of the disco hit "The Hustle," sound bleached out and bland, full of keyboard-programmed ...
