Warm and Tender is a major achievement for Olivia Newton-John, a majestic combination of lullabies and standards. Where Eva Cassidy found fame with her posthumous folk-jazz version of "Over the Rainbow," Newton-John takes the Harold Arlen/E.Y. Harburg classic from The Wizard of Oz and gives it a mature and classy reading. Judy Garland still sounded like young Dorothy, even on her final recording, July-London-1969, but this especially beautiful rendition stands on its own with the popular artist taking the beloved classic to a new place. The title track is a co-write by John Farrar and Newton-John for her daughter, Chloe, who was the inspiration for these recordings. In 1992, when it had its first recording, Frank Wildhorn and Nan Knighton's The Scarlet Pimpernel was a concept album vaguely based on the novels of Baroness Oczy, but without a real story and largely constructed as a star vehicle for Linda Eder. Nearly six years later, the cast album of the Broadway show (with a libretto by Knighton) that opened November 9, 1997, is a vast improvement. Six of the 15 vocal numbers have been cut and eight added, providing a much-needed balance of material by beefing up the parts of the villain and the Scarlet Pimpernel himself. The soft rock arrangements have been jettisoned, and there is more of the Les Miserables-like, convincingly theatrical style of original songs such as "Into the Fire" and "The Creation of Man."
