There is no irony to be found in the title Wallace Roney chose for his 14th studio album. The title is a statement. This album is most assuredly jazz, despite the presence of turntablists (DJ Axum appears for the second straight album, joined by Val Jeanty), occasional tangents into electronic downtempo, and 21-year-old bassist Rashaan Carter's teaming with drummer Eric Allen to lay down some of the thickest grooves this side of hip-hop. The bass doesn't walk all that much (which isn't to say that Carter's debut is anything short of outstanding) and you won't find much swing-era swinging or obsessions with '60s bop. That's a good thing. Jazz is 21st century jazz by a weathered, seasoned, and credentialed 20-year vet. Unlike many contemporary musicians, Roney (the same trumpeter faultily plagued by Miles Davis-clone assassinations) is not stuck in the past. Instead, he makes music that is an ode to the past, music one wouldn't mistake as straight-ahead jazz, although it does stare and venture straight ahead. On "Stand," Roney's reprise of the Sly Stone classic, Jeanty scratches in the chant "break the rules." Jazz, however, sounds less like rebellion and more like invention. For the past three LPs -- Jazz, Prototype (2004), and Mystikal (2005) -- Roney and his trusted companions (pianist and wife Geri Allen, saxophonist and brother Antoine Roney) have collaborated to produce music the opposite of static. There is nothing static about tunes like Carter's urban and brooding "Fela's Shrine" that begins with a world vibe and morphs into street-corner jazz and Roney's "Revolution: Resolution," which travels through esoteric (in jazz terms) techno to the song's bellicose theme. These are jazz songs that couldn't have been created until now, contemporary in a fundamental (but not commercial) way. The older, purist crowd may either scoff or trivialize this album, which is actually expected. Jazz points to the new direction of jazz, and not everyone has to or will follow. ~ Vincent Thomas

Personnel: Wallace Roney (trumpet); DJ Axum, Val "Gelder" Jeanty (turntables).

Additional personnel: Antoine Roney (bass clarinet); Robert Irving III (Fender Rhodes piano); Geri Allen (keyboards); Rashaan Carter (bass guitar); Eric Allen (drums).

Down Beat (p.56) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he party sounds of 'Vater Time' boost the spirit, with nothing half-hearted about the attack of this bent boogaloo."
JazzTimes (p.103) - "The Roneys are at the top of their game here, each soloing brilliantly....This recording is highly recommended to all whose jazz taste buds are receptive to a full variety of flavors."

Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs  (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition

Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL. There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music. Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated across the set lists, no two tracks sound the same. The players improvise at a fever-pitch, pushing themselves to endless invention, and the ensemble's interplay--expressionistic, protean, and fierce--is near telepathic. The influence of rock artists like Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix can be heard in the layering of deep funk rhythms and psychedelic inflections (especially with Miles's wah-filtered trumpet), but the overall sound seems to subsume and transcend the entire history of 20th century music. In a career full of musical innovation, this is some of Miles's most visionary work, and this essential set (which also boasts splendid remastering) documents it for a near-religious listening ...

Wallace Roney Mystikal CD  (2005)

Jazz music CDs
CD $13.85  4 stars Audio Samples
Upon first listen to trumpeter Wallace Roney's Mystikal one might be inclined to marginalize it as yet another attempt to re-create '70s-era Miles Davis. This would be a mistake. While Roney has always owed a large debt to the iconic jazz innovator -- he even played with Davis on a concert released as Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux -- Mystikal is a modern album made up of vintage parts. Which is to say that while Roney has deep affection for the sounds of '60s jazz and '70s funk and fusion, he is a resolutely forward-thinking musician who borrows from a variety of sources and time periods even when the overall sound is funky. Featuring his longtime working band including pianist Geri Allen, brother saxophonist Antoine Roney, keyboardist Adam Holzman, bassist Matt Garrison, drummer Eric Allen, percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr., and turntablist Val Jeanty, Roney has largely crafted a sister album to 2004's similarly minded Prototype. Like that album, Mystikal is in many ways a standard jazz album with some original compositions, a cover of a standard, and a lesser known piece by a well-known artist. This time around that artist is Wayne Shorter, whose "Atlantis" kicks off the album. An expansive and creepily funky piece off Shorter's underrated 1985 album of the same name, Roney turns the song into a moody mix of Miles in the Sky-esque post-bop, '80s hip-hop, and new age atmospherics. Similarly engaging is his melancholy cover of the Temptations classic "Just My Imagination," which draws out the deeper, more sanguine harmonics of the song even while it perfectly embodies the innocent romance of the original. Interestingly, Roney makes room for some straight-ahead but no less adventurous stuff here covering trumpeter Kenny Dorham's jaunty ...

Inspired by his work on Spike Lee's WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE, a documentary about Hurricane Katrina, trumpeter Terence Blanchard embarked on his own exploration of the Katrina disaster with TALE OF GOD'S WILL (A REQUIEM FOR KATRINA). The album re-arranged four of Blanchard's tracks from the documentary, and adds nine new tracks, all of which are performed by Blanchard's crack quintet and a full string orchestra. A New Orleans native, Blanchard clearly has a profound investment in the city ...

Mccoy Tyner Quartet CD  (2007)

CD $13.49  4.7 stars Audio Samples
McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, over New Year's, Joe Lovano does the honors in the tenor sax chair, while bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts hold the rhythm section together with honor, passion, and drive. The world-class bassist and drummer, usually known for their overt showmanship and over the top chops, show remarkable restraint and sensitivity throughout. Tyner and friends play several of his original compositions, well-known and revered over the years. Lovano sounds, eerily enough, like Pharoah Sanders, employing a slightly staggered expansive vibrato on "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit," while using a more haunting stance à la Coltrane for "Mellow Minor," a new modern mainstream tune. Sounding more like himself, Lovano and the group join a loping desert caravan for the beautiful "Sama Layuca," with Lovano playing the part originally written for flute. They rip through "Passion Dance" and melt abject militarism during the poignant ballad "Search for Peace." Tyner, in character, utilizes a minimalist palette to extrapolate on improvisationally during his solos. After reported health problems, it is good to hear he is sounding quite inspired and energetic during the entire date. The happy song "Blues on the Corner" further cements his upbeat demeanor, while the finale/solo standard "For All We Know" is truly the real McCoy, replete with the many flourishes, dynamism, and harmonic colorations that distinguish him from all others. In many ways this is a remarkable date, a well-paced program with all the pieces (save ...

Bobby Watson From The Heart CD  (2008)

CD $13.59  Audio Samples
Bobby Watson credits Art Blakey with showing him the ropes through the apprentice system, which included recruiting up-and-coming musicians, giving them advice, plus encouraging the younger players to write charts and originals for the band. Watson's Live & Learn band is such a format, a successor to his earlier on-again, off-again Horizon, with one former member back in the fold in bassist Curtis Lundy. The alto saxophonist has changed the format slightly, expanding his quintet to add vibes, played ably by Warren Wolf, with pianist Harold O'Neal, trumpeter Leron Thomas, and drummer Quincy Davis all showing promising signs of players who are likely to make lasting impressions on the jazz scene. Watson contributed six originals, including the hip, tasty riff tune "Wilkes BBQ," the perky "Deep Pockets," and the humorous Latin-flavored post-bop "Aye Caramba." O'Neal contributed the richly textured ballad "Purple Flowers" and the intricate "Timeless," while Wolf penned the lush "For Milt" (which is likely for the late vibraphonist Milt Jackson). Thomas' "Marcus Vein" provides an intense cooker to wrap this outstanding session. ...

CD $10.59  Audio Samples
Recorded in New York, New York in 1931 & 1932. Originally released as Columbia Special Products (P3 16493). Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont. The Boswell Sisters formed in New Orleans in the mid-1920s and had disbanded by the mid-'30s. During their career they were backed on record by such as Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, and Bunny Berigan. Theirs was a deceptively genteel-sounding take on the hot jazz stylings of the period, their harmonies sweet on first listen, but full of mad yet focused swing, appealingly sassy tartness and amazing vocal gymnastics. Their songs were not merely springboards for improvising. "Shout, Sister, Shout" reflects the influence of Southern gospel, and "There'll Be Some Changes Made" is wistful yet rollicking. These songs--"It's the Girl," "I Thank You, Mr. Moon"--are very much of the period, but the Boswells' genius allows them to transcend it. Without the Boswell Sisters, there'd be no Andrews Sisters (a poppier, white-bread version of the Boswells), no Shangri-La's and no Manhattan Transfer. Plus you get to hear some lightning-fast, sizzling-hot solos from jazz violin legend Joe Venuti and big-band stars-to-be Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. This release is essential for jazz and pop group-vocal fans. Additional personnel includes: ...

25 Years Of Soul: 1970 CD  (1997)

Jazz songs
CD $7.49  Audio Samples
Flashback, a division of Rhino devoted to budget collections, has a winner with this sampling of the soul music of 1970. All ten tracks were Top Ten soul hits, five of them reaching the top of the Billboard chart and seven going gold. Six originated with Atlantic Records (one of which, Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia," was issued on its Cotillion subsidiary); two with Holland-Dozier-Holland Productions, which the songwriter/producers established after leaving Motown (the Chairmen of the Board's "Give Me Just a Little More Time" on Invictus and 100 Proof Aged in Soul's "Somebody's Been Sleeping" on Hot Wax); one with Stang Records (the Moments' "Love on a Two-Way Street"); and one with Chimneyville (King Floyd's "Groove Me"). The tracks trace the development of soul music in the '70s, the expressive pop/R&B of Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett combining with the Motown-styled Chairmen of the Board and the forward-looking funk of King Floyd. And then there are indelible ...

Wisdom's Pearls
Lorraine & Bill Liswell - Special Guests Frank Vignola and Rich Zukor Wisdom's Pearls CD  (2007)

Jazz songs
CD $9.35
Wisdom's Pearls - (Note from Lorraine) About five years ago, I began composing songs and carried an old tape recorder in my car to capture any good possibilities. Having sung with bands of many styles most of my life, and being ever hopeful, I figured I'd recognize a good song if it came to me. At Christmas about a year later, Bill gave me a small hand-held recorder. I found I could increase my songwriting time by carrying it with me during my daily walks. The songs came, and I became obsessed with composing. Not being an instrumentalist, I called on the combined talents of Bill, and our friend Kevin Gallagher, to create the accompaniments to my songs. All but four of the songs on this CD were created in this way. Of those four, Bill alone wrote the accompaniment for Kiss My Blues Away. Melody for a Day and Hobohemian Rag originated with mandolin and guitar riffs that Kevin had created and then asked me to build songs around. Kevin's initial ideas are the intros to those songs. Kevin and Bill co-composed Chèvre À GoGo just days before going into the studio. Our recording dream was realized in June 2007, when jazz guitarist Frank Vignola and drummer Rich Zukor joined Bill and I to record six of the songs on this CD. Frank and Rich intuitively knew how to capture the mood for each song. Frank's virtuosity is astounding. Rich is an exuberant percussionist, his Djembe playing provided dynamic rhythmic accompaniment and drive. It was truly a memorable experience to play with such great musicians. Bill was smiling all day!Drummer Lorne Entress added captivating percussion and solid drumming to the other five compositions. Kevin contributed melodic dobro and mandolin parts to these tracks. Bill's fine jazz chording, fluid guitar solos, and powerful bass lines are heard throughout the CD.

I'm thrilled and honored to have had the chance to sing and savor our songs with such a ...
