| | Susan Pereira Tudo Azul CD (2007)
Latin Lounge Jazz: Havana music CDs
$12.15 With the incredible output of jazz CDs by new artists in first decade of the 21st century, it is a challenge for someone to stand out with a debut recording. But vocalist/pianist/composer Susan Pereira, gifted with a beautiful voice, terrific keyboard chops and a knack for arranging, is the exception to the rule, backed by a strong rotating cast of musicians, including trumpeter Claudio Roditi, guitarist Romero Lubambo, multi-reed player Laura Dreyer (a former member of Diva) and trombonist Luis Bonilla, among others. Starting with her lively composition "West End P.A.," featuring a catchy wordless vocal and terrific chops at the keyboard. Everyone seems afire in the brisk setting of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." She switches to singing in English in the breezy take of Milton Nascimento's "Nada Será Como Antes" and a haunting Latin arrangement of "Our Day Will Come" that features the leader overdubbed on numerous percussion instruments. The one instrumental is Pereira's "Tudo Azul," a driving samba showcasing Roditi's whimsical solo and Dreyer's exuberant alto sax. Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden
The CD liner notes by ALFREDO CRUZ are below: TUDO AZUL -- Beautiful Hues of Brazilian Jazz In an age when mediocrity is often rewarded and glorified - in a time when the use of gimmicks is promoted as talent, it's reassuring to hear pure, clean, clear, distinct, soulful, and beautiful music made by real, gifted musicians. Tudo Azul is a pristine Brazilian addition to the world of jazz.Music is about moving our soul. I'm convinced that's the way we all measure the things we love, whether it's food, friends or music. The more things move us, the more we love them. Tudo Azul, by Susan Pereira and Sabor Brasil, is a stellar collection of soul-felt performances, beautiful compositions, great arrangements and inspired playing that is sure to move you deeply. There's an unrelenting swing that takes hold at the beginning of "West End P.A.", meanders through various other styles and doesn't let go until the last note of "Na Baixa do Sapateiro". Susan Pereira brings a sense of care and sensitivity to each selection. Whether it's one of her five compositions or any of the other five classics included here, the emphasis is always on the music - and the music alone. There's no one individual or instrument favored over another, instead, a fusion of collective talent is highlighted throughout the recording. Susan takes full creative advantage of each of the fabulous musicians to express her unique musical ...
| | Gary Schutt Excruciating Pleasures CD (2007)
Latin Lounge Jazz: Havana songs
$16.45 from: MelodicRock - Andrew McNeice rating: 82% The talented Gary Schutt is back with his new project - essentially all Gary anyway, but what the heck! Style wise Gary has modernized a touch, with a heavier and darker guitar tone employed. But generally, his vocals and the song style is all melodic. Fans of his previous work will identify with this and should - like me - rate it as his best release to date. Strong songs and good chorus hooks - and of course, it rocks! Gotta love the track Psycho Bitch!from: RATHOLE - Scott Bazzett rating: 8/10 I swear I don't know what to make of this guy. He is so talented I get a headache just thinking about it. He's got a fantastic voice. Great power, range and clarity and he does some great stuff with it too. Good harmonies and vocal melodies! His guitar playing is amazing. No matter what style he is playing, he just nails it, like that's what he was born to play. The drum lines are interesting and well thought out, and oddly enough he is most famous as a bass player. Go figure! He also wrote and produced everything. I honestly think he might be schizophrenic. The absolute abandon he displays while churning through genre and style! boundaries be damned! I mean after years of playing covers ...
