Airport Girl have eased up on the eclectic style-shifting that marked Honey, I'm an Artist and Do You Dream in Color for their second full-length album, Slow Light, though at the same time the British sextet is clearly mastering their chosen style of lovely but downbeat mid-tempo indie pop. Which isn't to say that Slow Light sounds monochromatic; the old-school synthesizer effects on "Ode to the City" and the lonely trumpet and steel guitar of "I've Seen Mexico" demonstrate how these musicians have learned to put fresh textures into their arrangements, and the simple but straightforward pop of "Don't Let Me Down Again" wouldn't feel out of place on Lloyd Cole's first album. Slow Light's dour mood never really lifts over the course of its 11 tracks (despite the increased volume and fuzzy guitars of the finale "Bullfighting"), but the cumulative effect is thoughtfully contemplative rather than just bummed out, and the spare but eloquent music generates an ascetic beauty that's truly effecting. The musicians bring off these songs with understated brilliance (especially vocalist and guitarist Robert Price and keyboard man David Hill) and what could have been mere navel-gazing from other musicians is transformed into something eloquent and quietly remarkable; this is music for the middle of the night at its best. ~ Mark Deming

Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, and Geddy Lee is utterly uncanny, the anticipation and the willingness to add flourishes and to challenge one another in the bridges and solo sections reveal their command of the material and their empathies for one another's playing strengths. One of the more revealing things on a live record such as this one is the sophistication in Lee's vocal delivery now that his singing voice has deepened with age. The only time on the entire disc when ...

Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974. It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording. Delivering lengthy monologues both inbetween and during the songs, Zappa provides light-hearted contrast to the mulit-textured, typically ...

Wondering how Aerosmith ended up with such a legendary reputation? The answer can be found for those who dive into this special package of Aerosmith's first three albums and behold the magic woven by America's premiere hard-rock band before excess and ego took over. Coming out of Boston in 1973 with its self-titled debut, this quintet was originally derided as an American version of the Rolling Stones thanks to the physical similarities between Jagger/Richards and Tyler/Perry. But with such future hits as "Dream On," "Walk This Way," and "Sweet Emotion," Aerosmith showed that it was blazing its own path. With influences that ranged from the Memphis soul of Rufus Thomas ("Walking the Dog") and the jump blues of Bullmoose Jackson ("Big Ten Inch Record") to the British Invasion blues-rock of the Yardbirds ("Train Kept a Rollin'"), the boys from Beantown were as much rock fans as rock stars. In addition to the aforementioned covers and hits, lesser-known but equally worthy originals to check out include "Mama Kin," "Seasons of Wither," "Uncle Salty," and "Lord of the Thighs," all crucial building blocks in the Aerosmith legacy. 5ive - Import CD THE COLLECTION ...

After spending 12 years as a member of Bob Marley's Wailers, Peter Tosh was eager to break free from the shadow of the legendary frontman. In 1976, he released LEGALIZE IT, still one of the most significant albums in the history of reggae. The title track expresses one of Tosh's many political causes, justifying the legalization of marijuana as a remedy for various medical ailments. "Burial" is one of several tracks that features the talents of the Wailers' stand-out lead ...

This album recalls great old ragtime jazz at its finest and Dixieland jazz at the same time. While lead singer and pianist Buck Evans has a spoken-word delivery that adds little to the record, the musicianship of trombonist Mike Hobe and clarinet master Paul Woltz more than compensate for the ...

Arguably the funniest band in rock history and certainly the hammiest (dig that eye patch), Dr. Hook, after famously lamenting their lack of fame in "On the Cover of the Rolling Stone," actually did run up an impressive string of Top 40 hits in the latter part of the '70s--as well as finally nabbing that coveted magazine cover story. GREATEST HOOKS is a misleading compilation: it's not a definitive ...
