| | Dr Hook Greatest Hooks CD Dr Hook Discography of CDs
Arguably the funniest band in rock history and certainly the hammiest (dig that eye patch), Dr. Hook, after famously lamenting their lack of fame in "On the Cover of the Rolling Stone," actually did run up an impressive string of Top 40 hits in the latter part of the '70s--as well as finally nabbing that coveted magazine cover story. GREATEST HOOKS is a misleading compilation: it's not a definitive career-spanning collection of the band's greatest songs--in fact, it barely touches upon the early 1970s, when most of their material was written by Shel Silverstein.
While songs like "Rolling Stone" and "Sylvia's Mother"--among the few early gems included here--represent their most enduring era, critically speaking, Dr. Hook in the late '70s was an impressive blue-eyed soul band that knew how to send an easy-listening groove up the charts. GREATEST HOOKS concerns itself mostly with this period, and with tracks such as "Sharing the Night Together," "Better Love Next Time," "Sexy Eyes," and "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman," the collection has everything the casual fan needs and more.

| | Best Of Arlo Guthrie CD (1977)
Greatest Hooks CD music
$7.95 Woody Guthrie's son Arlo successfully made a name for himself with a body of work that falls under the shadow of his father only peripherally. Beginning as a sort of comic troubadour, Arlo laid out a persona that was all his own with "Alice's Restaurant Masacree." He followed his debut album with another in a similar vein--ARLO, which yielded "Motorcycle (Significance Of The Pickle)." This was followed by a series of smartly written, arranged and produced albums which benefited from great players (Ry Cooder, Doug Dillard, Richie Hayward, Chris Ethridge, and Clarence White, among others) and sympathetic producers (including Lenny Waronker and Van Dyke Parks).
The remainder of his works for Warner Brothers (now all reissued on his own Rising Son Records) were a quietly dazzling array of warm, inventive ensemble playing and superb songwriting. Though primarily popular as whole albums, there were a couple of notable hits, including "Coming Into Los Angeles" and "City Of New Orleans." This collection features some of the finest songs of his career.

| | Sultans Of Swing: The Very Best Of Dire Straits CD (1998)
Greatest Hooks music CDs
$11.19 Also includes material from Mark Knopfler's side project, The Notting Hillbillies.
Additional personnel includes: Sting, Jeff Porcaro, Joop de Korte.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
This solid collection is a compelling career overview of one of rock's most distinctive groups. Led by Mark Knopfler, whose deadpan vocal style and stunning guitar technique characterize the band's sound, Dire Straits burst on the scene in 1978 with "Sultans of Swing." This VERY BEST OF begins there (even amid the ensemble's later hits, the lead-off track's clean shuffle rhythm and minor-key melody still dazzles) and continues all the way to cuts from the group's 1991 release, ON EVERY STREET, and their 1993 live outing, ON THE NIGHT.
The Dylan-esque narrative of "Romeo and Juliet," from MAKING MOVIES, is one of the early highlights here. At the collection's heart are the tracks from the 1985 blockbuster BROTHERS IN ARMS, including the lamenting "So Far Away," bopping "Walk of Life," and the irrepressible "Money for Nothing." Beyond showcasing Knopfler's excellent songwriting, this album is ...
