For decades by this point, Canada has spawned countless rock bands -- some that have been able to cross over to worldwide success (Neil Young, Rush, etc.), and some that never truly connected outside of the Great White North (the Tragically Hip, Moist, etc.). Come 2007, the world received another "big in Canada, hoping to break elsewhere" band -- Mobile. Specializing in a radio-friendly sound that merges pop melodies with alt-rock so smoothed out that "alt-pop" is probably a more fitting description (although a dash of rock guitar can be detected), these Montreal natives scored a hit back home with their full-length debut, Tomorrow Starts Today, which later secured a U.S. deal. In the era's Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand-friendly climate, Mobile should have no problem connecting with the aforementioned group's audiences, as evidenced by such similarly styled tunes as "Out of My Head" and "See Right Through Me." That said, there's not a heck of a whole lot to differentiate Mobile from the rest of the pack. ~ Greg PratoAlternative Press (p.181) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Two seconds into the blazing title track -- all propulsive, jerky dance beats, dark waves of down-stroke guitar and snotty call and response vocals -- you'll find your new summer jam." | | Peter Bjorn & John Writer's Block CD (2006)
Tomorrow Starts Today CD music
$9.89 The Stockholm trio of Peter Moren, Bjorn Yttling, and John Eriksson scored a European hit with their delightfully amateurish "Young Folks" single, included here complete with whistling and bongos. The rest of their second album, a fully realized fusion of intelligent songwriting and innovative production, is equally enchanting. Moren's "Objects Of My Affection" combines the rhythm, soul, and self-analysis of a RUBBER SOUL-era John Lennon composition with the atmosphere and melodic distortion of My Bloody Valentine, and Eriksson's "Up Against The Wall" evokes Blur's early Syd Barrett-influenced songs.
Peter Bjorn and John's third album deserves every bit of attention and hype it's received, from large media outlets right down to the lowliest blog. It's a major work of post-everything indie rock that has enough hooks, production genius, and emotional strength to make other rock acts (indie or otherwise) sound like they are just wasting everyone's time. The group's previous two albums were excellent power pop records with an excess of brains and style, whereas ...
| | Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream CD (2009)
Tomorrow Starts Today music CDs
$9.58 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. Boyle sings beautifully throughout, delivering more of the same of what she did in her moment in the sun on television. Those won over by Boyle, either her voice or story, will surely be satisfied.
There's no question that Susan Boyle's story is ...
| | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Tomorrow Starts Today songs
$15.64 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have ...

| | Mose Allison I Don't Worry About A Thing/Mose Alive CD (1999)
Tomorrow Starts Today music CDs
$10.59 Why does this great 1962 release remain in print while other classic Mose Allison albums languish in CD limbo? Probably because it contains the original version of Allison's most well known song, "Your Mind is on Vacation," a sarcastic blues he wrote to combat inattentive audience members. Fortunately for the listener, the rest of the album is even better.
Things kick off in classic Mose style. The title song and "It Didn't Turn Out that Way" find Allison practicing his trademark brand of bemused existentialism over angular jazz/blues vamps to fine effect. Some instrumental romps, including "Idyll" and "The Well," give Allison ...
| | Gipsy Kings Love & Liberte CD (1994)
Tomorrow Starts Today songs
$9.95 All songs written or co-written by members of The Gipsy Kings.
LOVE & LIBERTE was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
After their internationally successful 1988 self-titled debut, few have followed the the Gypsy Kings' noteworthy fusion of their distinctive flamenco-inflected pop with other international influences. Love & Liberte, a 1994 Elektra Records release, is one of their few compilations of all-new material, one that demonstrates this growth perhaps more than any of their other projects. One of their more extravagant songs, "No Vivire" implements a prominent bassline ...
