On the follow-up to his hugely successful 2006 debut, NEW JOC CITY, ATL native Yung Joc shows further versatility as he toes the line between hardcore dopeman image and radio-friendly mass appeal. The overt coke-serving imagery throughout the lead single, "Coffee Shop," is tempered with an infectiously happy background track and pubescent chorus singers. Joc gets gangsta with the Game, Block, and Jim Jones on the gritty, DJ Quik-produced "Cutthroat" and then plays around with alphabet nursery rhymes alongside Bun B and Young Dro on "I'm a G."
The production (courtesy of Cool and Dre, Don Vito, Don P, The Neptunes, Jazzy Pha, Chris Flames, DJ Dana, Strong Hill, and Khao) wavers between traditionally gritty trap music and pop fare while Yung Joc does his best to mask the adult content of HUSTLENOMICS with euphemisms like "servin' pies" and "smell that fruity fruit." Gorilla Zoe, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, Mike Carlito, Southern Girl, and Diddy round out the thick guest list.

straight
I thought most the songs were straight until the momma song. The pak man song was different but I liked it. Personally I liked gettin to the money and chevy smile the best. I'd give it a four out of five.

Joc could have came harder if he wanted to, I think on this album he got caught up in all the commercial hype. Put it this way, I wouldnt spend money to buy this CD.

In a deep, dark basement somewhere on a cracked back road in Smalltown, Massachusetts, a group of gentlemen known as Carry the Zero are concocting plans for world-music domination. Through talent, plain and simple…talent that's obvious in each notated expression that crosses your brainwaves, talent that I recently got a chance to sit back and savor and a CTZ rehearsal session. Bottles of fine Bordeaux for some. Cases of Bud diesel for others. Carry the Zero for you and me.The trio's energetic, crowd-pleasing stage show is of a caliber one would expect to see from established performances in any international city. In other words: CTZ is tight as tight can be, as is evident on "Hey, Hey," the first track off the freshly-minted Pulse-exclusive demo (one of the perks) that CTZ forked over. Like many displaced Southerners, Swamp Cabbage guitarist/vocalist Walter Parks is a conflicted soul. Raised in a religious environment that he seems uncomfortable with, the now N.Y.C.-based Parks combines spirituality and sexuality with urban and rural landscapes and soaks them all in the murky, swampy waters of the Mississippi. It's natural to point at obvious touchstones of old (pre-sequencers) ZZ Top, North Mississippi Allstars, and Mofro as musical influences for this trio, but there is also a funky undercurrent of the Meters and Memphis R&B mixed with the raw, often soulful rhythms. The band's second album, recorded between Parks' commitments to his full-time gig as Richie Havens' lead guitarist, is a low-down, high-spirited trawl down the back roads of Dixieland. Parks, bassist Matt Lindsey, and a drummer who goes by Jagoda take equal credit for the ten originals (three of which are instrumentals), but it's the singer/guitarist's deep dark growling Billy Gibbons/Tom Waits/Frank Zappa snarl and slinky six-string lines that drive this music. Occasional organ washes and female backing vocalists bring the gospel edge that references, reinforces, and ultimately highlights the dryly ironic lyrical slant. Parks loves him some poontang, enough to use that as a title to the disc's longest cut. It's probably the only song you'll hear that mentions it and Jesus in the chorus. Jesus also looms large in the proceedings from the first track, "Jesus Tone," but not in the stereotypical fashion. The title relates to Parks' guitar as he explains, "I say to hell with the Devil and black cat bone, I just need my guitar and my Jesus Tone." Parks is, perhaps not surprisingly, infatuated with ...
