Prior to 2007's UNDERCLASS HERO, Sum 41's studio follow-up to the well-received CHUCK, the Canadian punk-pop band weathered the departure of longtime guitarist Dave Baksh. The resultant streamlined sound suits the trio well, with frontman Deryck Whibley--fresh off of a stint producing tracks on Avril Lavigne's THE NEXT BEST THING--balancing melody with punk-inspired aggression, as best revealed on the title song, which comes across like the naïve younger sibling of Fugazi's anti-establishment anthem "Merchandise." Other revved-up tunes, most notably the propulsive "March of the Dogs," point to the act's apparent aspiration to become a pop-friendly version of Rancid, making Sum 41 the bad-boy group of choice for sensitive kids not willing to hop on the emo bandwagon.
Sum 41: Deryck Whibley (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Cone (bass guitar); Stevo (drums, percussion).
Spin (p.138) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] bigger, slicker record laced with potent AMERICAN-IDIOT style Bush-bashing..." Kerrang (Magazine) (pp.46-47) - "[M]ixing easy familiarity with just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing where they might head to next." ***** Deserves All the Hype It's Wrapped Up In!!! Underclass Hero Is an Excellent Example of Maturity & Getting Serious ( Musicwise)for the band. Of Course it almost feels like they have stolen the idea of Green Day's American Idiot " Down-with-Bush!" attitude, but so what, At Least they are Using an Idea that Rocked the World and plus, These two bands are NOT the ONLY bands who do this " Down-with-Bush!" attitude, there are alot more! But Getting back to " Underclass Hero", Truthfully, I have to say that I LOVE Underclass Hero the SAME as Every Other Album that Sum 41 has Ever put out. And Even Though Dave " Brownsound" Baksh has quit the band and they are missing his guitar sound on this album, who cares, Sum 41 Still Rocks, Deryck Whibley is not Overly bad on guitar, but that's just it, Deryck said it himself that he doesn't see himself as THE ( greatest) guitar player, he focuses more on Singing and Songwriting, and that's pretty good if you ask me. And to fill in in Brownsound's place, ( On Tour) they Recruited Tom Thacker, better known as the Lead Singer/ Guitarist of another Awesome Punk Rock Band, " Gob". He may not be AS good as Dave was, but He still is pretty awesome. I Suppose My FAVORITE Songs would have to be: " Underclass Hero", " Walking Disaster", " Speak of the Devil", " Count Your Last Blessings", " March of the Dogs", " The Jester", " With Me", " Pull the Curtain", " King of Contradiction", " Confusion and Frustration In Modern Times", and I Even Love the Non- Album track ( B- Side) " No Apologies". Keep On Rockin' Sum 41!!! Submitted by Justin (St. Anthony, NL, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
AWESOME! as Everything Else They've Done! Underclass Hero is an awesome album. Even though Brownsound is no longer apart of Sum 41 anymore, and they are missing his sound, it still sounds just as good without him Deryck is doing great on guitar without him. Think of it as a small crack on a windshield, it's nothing serious, but you know it's there. That crack is the fact that Brownsound is Gone. Sum 41 still rocks like they always have before. My very favorite songs are; Underclass Hero, March of the Dogs, The Jester, Pull the Curtain, and Confusion & Frustration in Modern Times. ROCK On! HELL YEAH! Underclass Hero album
$5.55 CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last studio recording with Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer before the return of original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.
Despite a 1996 press conference on the U.S.S. Intrepid that announced Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer were on a "paid temporary vacation," the two were dismissed months later after a reunion tour of the original make-up clad members proved wildly successful. As the sub-heading states, CARNIVAL OF SOULS is the last recorded efforts of Kulick and Singer with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Drawing on music trends started as far back as the lean times of the '80s, CARNIVAL finds Kiss putting together a sound that draws from the dirge of Alice In Chains and the crunch of old-school Metallica.
Much more somber than prior Kiss albums, nihilism runs rampant on songs such as "Hate" and "I Walk Alone." The mid-paced tempos of "Childhood's End" and "I Will Be There" inject some variety into a mix that includes Middle ...
| | Sum 41 Chuck CD (2004)
Underclass Hero CD music
$12.59 Sum 41's super-heavy 2002 album, DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED?, was an exercise in speedy hardcore matched with thundering metal bombast, suggesting that the group might soon morph into a full-fledged thrash band. While CHUCK does refine that style even further than its predecessor, the 2004 album also signals a growing musical curiosity. "Intro," the disc's aptly titled opening song, features tersely picked guitar lines that recall some of the darker moments of Pink Floyd's THE WALL, while "Slipping Away" and ...

| | Horrors Strange House CD (2007) Enhanced CD
Underclass Hero songs
$9.99 On their singles and EPs, the Horrors proved they'd done their post-punk and freakbeat homework. With their debut album, Strange House, they push their sound forward, distill it to its rawest essence, and give it a few funhouse mirror twists and turns for good measure. Almost half of the songs on the album already appeared on previous Horrors releases, but the ever-so-slightly cleaner production here gives more definition to their black-on-black sound. The band kicks off Strange House by revisiting their cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's "Jack the Ripper," which begins at a zombie-slow pace, then suddenly speeds up halfway through, transforming into a hurtling roller coaster of a song that makes a great introduction to Strange House's mix of campy humor, energy, and menace. With its dive-bombing noise barely held together by Faris Badwan's shouting and the faintest hint of a melody, "Sheena Is a Parasite" is still the Horrors' best and most radical song, although several other tracks here rival its black-hearted thrills. Once again, Spider Webb's vicious keyboards are the band's not-so-secret weapon, especially on the fantastic, strutting "She ...

| | Deodato Love Island CD (1978) (Import) United Kingdom
Underclass Hero songs
$12.65 A British import reissue from 2002 of Deodato's late '70s record LOVE ISLAND. The album contains sounds based in rock but with colorings of disco and fusion. Jazz standard "Take the A Train" is the closer among eight songs.
1978's Love Island found Deodato in pretty much the same space he'd been for much of the decade, concocting his own ineffable brew of fusion and funky disco, with the help of friends and cover songs along the way. Love Island finds him unleashing yet another passel of songs which are all pleasant to the ear, if not completely fresh -- what makes it most interesting is that it could almost be considered a concept album, every song title apparently revolving around jungle tropics, warm winds, sandy beaches, and, more likely than not, a few beauties bearing cocktails to complete the picture. The album kicks off with "Area Code 808," which places the initial action in Hawaii, a twitchy extended fusion revolving around quite a nice funk ...
