| Fogelberg's "Phoenix" Rises From its Ashes
For anyone who's been touched by the music of Dan Fogelberg (and if you haven't you are living on some other planet), "Phoenix", his 1979 combo platter of guitar-driven rock anthems and sweet, touching ballads, was one of his string of late 70s-early 80s successes, starting with "Nether Lands" and ending with "The Innocent Age." Some would include the earlier "Souvenier" as well. But Phoenix reached No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year, spawned a couple of radio hits and at least one standard ("Longer"). It also supplied AOR with some powerful guitar-driven tracks like the title song, "Face the Fire", and "Beggar's Game." The problem with "Phoenix" was when the CD was released in 1985, and never remastered domestically. The sound was compressed, recorded at a low reference level, and, as often happened in the early days of the CD, just didn't sound right. It was very frustrating, as this is one of Fogelberg's essential works. That's been resolved now by the release of the series of recordings mentioned above, plus his earliest two solo recordings. "Phoenix" finally comes to life in this DSD remaster from Japan, where they apparently care about this stuff. With far greater dynamic range and remarkable clarity and detail, this is what the late Fogelberg's entire catalogue deserves and hopefully will eventually get. It is well worth the wait and the price, and the package (the mini-LP cover complete with gatefold and all miniaturized artwork and inserts) makes it not only a pleasure to listen to but to look at and hold as well. Thanks to CD Universe those of us who care about this and other artists who have been given the same treatment can now enjoy these works almost as much as we did the first time around when they were actual LPs. Highly recommended!
