Originals: Jazz For Dinner album
$15.95 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ David Waxman.
Despite the rather unfortunate title, Ultra Chilled, Vol. 1 assembles some of the most established names in down-tempo electronica and trip-hop, mixing them with some relative unknowns. The flow from Dido to Gorillaz to St. Germain to Morcheeba is deceptively smooth, as is what will be most listeners' introductions to acts like Zero 7 and Goldfrapp, with each song seamlessly blending into one another. The sequencing on the two-disc set is a little predictable, with many of the better-known artists grouped near the front of each disc, but little glimmers of familiarity (like Alex Gopher's "The Child" on disc two or the impeccable inclusion of Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining" on the first disc) near the ends frame the collection nicely. What could be considered dusty artifacts in the world of electronic music (Massive Attack's 1991 song "Hymn of the Big Wheel" ...
| | Global Underground: Locations CD (2002)
Originals: Jazz For Dinner CD music
$13.85 Constructing a mix album out of others' mix albums is a baffling proposition, but Global Underground: Locations does just that. Mixed by the series' own the Forth (previously responsible for Global Underground: Arrivals and Global Underground: Departures), this one also grabs tracks from past editions (devoted to Lee Burridge, John Digweed, Deep Dish, Darren Emerson) with no rhyme and no reason why these tracks couldn't have been taken from the original sources. At least the Forth steers away from high-gloss trance, instead sticking to '90s house. ~ John Bush
The 4th release in the Global Underground Sampler series brings together ...

Originals: Jazz For Dinner music CDs
$16.59 The blueprint for Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2 is the same as the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists (here, usual suspects like Boards of Canada, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Fila Brazillia, and Röyksopp). ~ John Bush
Fans eager for a successor to the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- will likely be disappointed by Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2. The blueprint is the same, with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists ...

| | Il Divo Ancora CD (2005) (Import) Germany
Originals: Jazz For Dinner CD music
$17.09 Knowing how to strike while the iron is hot, the international all-male pop-opera revue Il Divo, assembled by AMERICAN IDOL's Simon Cowell, followed up its 2005 debut (and subsequent Christmas album) with yet another outing in early 2006. Here the dashing vocal quartet--Urs Buhler (Switzerland), Sebastien Izambard (France), Carlos Marin (Spain), and David Miller (U.S.)--stays true to its multi-lingual repertoire, offering up a suitably dramatic Spanish version of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" ("Solo Otra Vez") and an English/French rendition of "I Believe in You" (with Celine Dion), among other numbers. While the arrangements on ANCORA are lush and majestic, they never overshadow the full, passionate voices of the foursome, who have clearly become used to working together as a powerful group.
2005 studio album that reflects the multi-national character of the group; the songs are not all sung in English, but drift between Spanish, English and Italian. However they are worded, ...

| | Earleybird Things Are Not What They Seem CD (2007)
Originals: Jazz For Dinner album
$10.15 An epic album spanning two years worth of work, THINGS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM is the perfect way to introduce Earleybird as an artist to anyone whom has yet to discover him. Featuring many up and coming artists from the Northern Virginia Area, such as Pat Paul, Revolution, King Jakob and the January 2007 Source Magazine Unsigned Hype artist Sketch, as well as seasoned veterans such as the Witchdoctor of the critically-acclaimed Dungeon Family and the underground pioneer Myka Nyne of the Freestyle Fellowship, not only is THINGS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM a chance for Earleybird to work with some of his favorite artists, but it is a platform by which he creates his own voice and broadcasts his own experiences through hip-hop as an artist in the 21st century. The title "THINGS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM" is a "broad philosophical statement ...
| | Ron Carter Uptown Conversation CD (1969)
Originals: Jazz For Dinner CD music
$9.69 Ron Carter's Uptown Conversation may very well be the most intriguing, challenging, and resonant statement of many he has made over the years as a leader. Originally on the Embryo imprint of Atlantic Records, Wounded Bird now reissues it with two alternate takes. As a prelude to his funkier electric efforts for CTI and the wonderful dates for Milestone Records where he emphasized the piccolo bass, these selections showcase Carter with unlikely partners in early creative improvised settings, a hint of R&B, and some of the hard-charging straight-ahead music that he is most well known for. Flute master Hubert Laws takes a prominent role on several tracks, including the title cut with its funky but not outdated style, where he works in tandem with Carter's basslines. On "R.J.," the short hard bop phrasings of Laws and Carter are peppy and brisk, but not clipped. The first rendering of "Little Waltz" apart from the Miles Davis repertoire to which Carter contributed is more pensive and delicate, with Laws at the helm rather than Davis' trumpet. Carter's trio recordings with pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Billy Cobham are cast in a different light, as the lengthy "Half a Row" (referring to six of a twelve-tone row) is at once free, spacy, loose, and very atypical ...
