I became interested in music when I was about ten. My Mom got this little keyboard. It was the kind you might find at a Wal-Mart with 37 keys and a few cheesy sounds. I loved playing songs on this keyboard by ear. A man that worked for my Dad played the guitar and taught me some basic chords to songs like "Amazing Grace". This was a big step in my piano playing because once I got those chords down pat I started learning new ones and variations of them. For the next couple of years I kept on learning and improving and also upgrading my previous keyboards with bigger and better ones. So far though, I was only playing on a 61 note keyboard and was feeling limited. I was so happy when I got my 88 weighted key digital piano. When I was around thirteen, I was getting ready for bed when I thought of the words to a song. That night I wrote my first song called, "The Lighthouse". I felt like the words came right from God and just fell onto the paper. Also around that time, I was asked to play in a friend's wedding. The only place I had played in front of people before was at a friend's piano recital as guest pianist. I accepted the invitation and a couple of months later I was playing in front of about 250 people at the wedding. I had a great time and feel it was a wonderful experience. A few months later I wrote another song and from then on I started writing songs quite often. I am 18 now and have written over 100 songs to date. I have written the music to numerous songs and have done the lead singing on a few songs for others. I play mostly by ear but I can also read some music. Even though I have never had piano lessons, I don't feel limited at all. I feel like I can learn at my own pace. Around October 2004,I joined an online forum called CSO (Christian Songwriting Organization). I have done quite a bit of collaboration work with people on there and have learned a lot. I am always encouraged by the people on the forum and am so glad I joined. As the years go on, I hope to grow spiritually and musically. I pray that the music I write and play will bless people and help them to see Jesus Christ through me. God Bless, -Douglas
