Swell album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of ...
| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Swell CD music
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert ...

Swell songs
$11.18 Lou Reed never struck anyone as one of the happiest guys in rock & roll, so some fans were taken aback when his 1984 album New Sensations kicked off with "I Love You, Suzanne," a catchy up-tempo rocker that sounded a lot like a pop tune. After reaffirming his status as one of rock's greatest poets with The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts, what was Reed doing here? Lou was having a great time, and his pleasure was infectious -- New Sensations is a set of straight-ahead rock & roll that ranks with the most purely enjoyable albums of Lou's career. Reed opted not to work with guitarist Robert Quine this time out, ...

Swell CD music
$13.69 The debut CD from Rubbernekkerz, "33 1/3rd" (Thirty Three and a Third), delivers an introspective range of alt-pop songs that create an emotional mood from a layering of sounds. Acoustic and synthetic textures blend to create a spacey backdrop for lyrics that circle around the reflective and often melancholy themes of time, youth, and aging. Rubbernekkerz is the creation of Toronto area musician Mark Harrington, who is joined by a second guitarist (Clay Phillips of Funhouse) on three tracks, and an occasional extra voice. Harrington released a number of independent solo recordings in the late 80s, and 2 CDs in the 90s: 1993's Capricorn Flakes, and 1999's Trash Icon. Rubbernekkerz music is different in feel from most of Harrington's previous music, hence the new name. Vocal similarities to Peter Murphy (Bauhuas) and Tom Verlaine (Television) have been noted in Harrington’s music (see reviews, below). Past comparisons to early Bowie led to the inclusion of a cover of David Bowie’s classic Changes on the new CD, with a faster tempo than the original. Tracks being presented to radio include the up-tempo rhythm-section-driven Where You Really Are, the lush acoustic-guitar sweeps of the down-tempo Awfully, and the synth-pop electronica of Never Be The Same Again and Mood Swinger. REVIEWS[the] songs are lot more interesting arrangement-wise than... dark-synth bands like Joy Division or Depeche Mode."Awfully" is a great song.- Aug. 2006...Harrington still enjoys a certain Peter Murphy/Tom Verlaine affinity...- Nov. 1999-- Jaimie Vernon, President, Bullseye Records / Author, Canadian Pop Music EncyclopediaI have to say that the "Trash Icon" CD is great. | | Apeyga Forward CD (2007)
Swell songs
$8.39 "Forward is a vibrant incorporation of light, lush melodic numbers like Liberatus and harder tracks like Rise And Shine. Effects pedals are kicked into fifth gear across the disc, flavouring five of the seven tracks. And these jams are tight, with each song under four minutes. Apeyga seem to be shooting here for quality, not quantity. There are a few evident comparisons to other bands here, most obviously King Crimson. Pinstripe and Liberatus evoke Discipline-era Crimson and would not be out of place during the 1983 Champaign-Urbana record sessions for that band’s Three Of A Perfect Pair release. The End Of Reason, with its monstrous wall of noise, would sit well aside The Construkction Of Light. Other influences abounding here and there, whether deliberate or otherwise, include Rush, Television, Providence, R.I.experimental noise-core duo Lightning Bolt, The Cocteau Twins, and indie instrumental band Tortoise. The self produced disc shines with excellent sound quality and deft musicianship. And judging by the amount of fan testimonials on the band’s website, they are apparently a phenomenal band to see live.According to the date and cities listed on their site they have not toured outside of California. It would be great to see them do that someday. This is a band with a great future ahead of them, no doubt."-The Dutch Progressive Rock Page ReviewThe new album "Forward" is here for 2007! This highly anticipated release, from the group that brought you genre-bending songs such as 'Futurelife" and "Am I Hip", is already receiving rave reviews. Documented as a main contributor to Jazz-Metal music, Apeyga's albums are a modern collection of original instrumental-electric compositions. In 2003 brothers Justin and John Peloian formed the band APEYGA. They began to create songs based on musical ideas Justin had originated a couple years earlier, during his ...
