Lo Esencial
$11.89 Latin pop boy band Aventura has achieved no small amount of success with their unique blend of traditional Dominican bachata and sleek, Top 40-oriented R&B. THE LAST, Aventura's fifth studio release, further explores the band's swoon-worthy style, and is one of their most accomplished and impressive efforts.
As usual, the quartet plays to their strengths, which include lilting tropical ballads, with the occasional foray into hip-hop-flavored slow jams, such as "Spanish Fly," featuring cameos from Ludacris and Wyclef Jean. Additional cameos from Akon, Wisin y Yandel, and jazz legend Arturo Sandoval heighten the star appeal of THE LAST, but it's Aventura's smooth, sultry bachata-pop that steals the show.

| | Victor Manuelle CD (1996)
Lo Esencial
$5.69 This is the recording that made Victor Manuelle a household name, placing him in the front rank of the most celebrated Puerto Rican salsa singers. The typically loud and brash Sergio George production seems an adequate backdrop for the talents of the improvisational singer, who finally reached his personal identity with this CD. This production features George's usual New York personnel: brass men José "Ite" Jerez, David "Piro" Rodríguez, William Cepeda, and Jimmy Bosch contribute heavily, while rhythm men Marc Quiñones, Rubén Rodríguez, and Luis Quintero, together with Manuelle's timbalero and band director, Chago Martínez, make a rabid, compelling percussive ensemble. Highlights include the smash hit "Hay Que Poner el Alma" (composed by Omar Alfanno), "Todo Quedo, Quedo," and Johnny Ortiz' ebullient salsa homage "Ahora Me Toca a Mí." One of Manuelle's most important productions, ...

| | Victor Manuelle Solo Contigo CD (1994)
Lo Esencial
$5.59 In his second effort for Sony Discos, Victor Manuelle is still looking for a musical stamp to match his skills as an improvisational artist; the material is competent enough, but doesn't bring any particular novelty. It would take one more CD (Victor Manuelle in 1996) to develop his loyal following. In any case, there are some good moments: the title tune, "Voy a Prometerme" (composed by the singer), and "Por Ejemplo" (by Pedro Azael) are reminders of his days with his former bandleader, the underrated Don Perignon. In any case, this is a noble work of the future superstar, who during this time was in the development stages of his career. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr.

| | Gregory Isaacs Love Is Overdue CD (1991)
Lo Esencial
$24.45 Lover's rock mainstay Gregory Isaacs released some of his finest material in the 1970s (though he continued to record quality albums in the '80s, '90s, and 2000s), and LOVE IS OVERDUE, a collection of recordings Isaacs made in the mid-to-late '70s with producer Alvin Ranglin, is nicely representative of that work. Interestingly, Isaacs is more emotive as a vocalist, and is working in a more straight roots style than he would later when he became known as "the Cool Ruler."
Also of note is Heartbeat Records' choice to remix the original recordings. On the assumption, supposedly, that contemporary ...

Lo Esencial
$12.69 I (Robert Towey) have always loved music and music in turn has proven more than just a sanctuary but also the purest form of salvation. I started playing at 15 and soon after hit the road in some very unconventional tour stops, mostly street corners, parking lots, hobo camps, happy hours, open mics. Getting there by way of freight trains and on foot or thumb. Prior to this last year I was working with the P.O.W's( prisoners of the war on drugs ), a band of felons, always looking for that musical furlough. I did 12 years on a marijuana conspiracy. I made the mistake of helping a friend out of a jam and wound up in a reverse sting costing me most of my twenties and thirties. My options were to cooperate with the feds ,(rat and help set up others ) plead guilty, or go to trial, which my lawyer assured me was a good option. This legal advice surely got me another 7 or 8 years.I just felt like I could have never broken the law with out the governments assistance. Entrapment I found out is not a defense, and for these mistakes I paid the price. Out now I still face the discrimination society places on the felon (an inability to vote, and the added burden placed upon us by employers and landlords). Many of my brothers remain behind the razor wire. ...
