Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Recorded at Hit City West, Hollywood Sound, California and Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. After staking out new territory with the underrated South of Heaven, Slayer brought back some of the pounding speed of Reign in Blood for their third major-label album, Seasons in the Abyss. Essentially, Seasons fuses its two predecessors, periodically kicking up the mid-tempo grooves of South of Heaven with manic bursts of aggression. "War Ensemble" and the title track each represented opposite sides of the coin, and they both earned Slayer their heaviest MTV airplay to date. In fact, Seasons in the Abyss is probably their most accessible album, displaying the full range of their abilities all in one place, with sharp, clean production. Since the band is refining rather than progressing or experimenting, Seasons doesn't have quite the freshness of its predecessors, but aside from that drawback, it's strong almost all the way from top to bottom (with perhaps one or two exceptions). Lyrically, the band rarely turns to demonic visions of the afterlife anymore, preferring instead to find tangible horror in real life -- war, murder, human weakness. There's even full-fledged social criticism, which should convince any doubters that Slayer aren't trying to promote the subjects they sing about. Like Metallica's Master of Puppets or Megadeth's Peace Sells...but Who's Buying, Seasons in the Abyss paints Reagan-era America as a cesspool of corruption and cruelty, and the music is as devilishly effective as ever. ~ Steve Huey Slayer built a rabid following with faster-than-light thrash metal, eerie, disturbing lyrics, and bassist/singer Tom Araya's screamed vocals. 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD, a blinding metal classic that clocked in at below a half hour in length and was produced by Rick Rubin, put the band on the metal map. Although Slayer was a bunch of longhairs, it wasn't uncommon to see hardcore skinheads slamming away at the band's shows. But 1988's SOUTH OF HEAVEN alienated many of Slayer's punk fans, as the group slowed their speed metal to a Black Sabbath-like crawl. 1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS follows its predecessor's formula. The album was embraced by metal-heads everywhere, eventually earning Slayer its first gold-certified record. The furious opening "War Ensemble" is a throwback to Slayer's earlier speed metal direction, while the album-closing title track is a murky, swarming chunk of metal. Other standouts include the chilling "Dead Skin Mask," which dealt lyrically with notorious killer Ed Gein, "Blood Red," "Expendable Youth," "Hallowed Point," and "Skeletons of Society." For fans of extreme-metal, it doesn't get any better than Slayer's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS.Entertainment Weekly (11/9/90) - "..Very heavy metal of the thrash kind.." - Rating: B+ Seasons In The Abyss Music Slayer Seasons In The Abyss Songs Seasons In The Abyss Music Seasons In The Abyss Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Definative Slayer; Authentic Metal If you want some music that will deepen your soul, here it is. The themes are presented for consideration only, there's no pressure to lead or follow here. Take the well crafted motifs for what they are, pertinent to the current day and potent in message. Also some of the heaviest metal music is presented with precisly aunuciated lyrics that have a solid theme and speak a clear message. This record is a gem. Absolute masterpiece This Slayer album set the standard. Not many bands can come with a complete mesmerizing album like this one. there is not a bad track on the album. The standouts are spirit in black and born of fire. Excellent! This is possibly Slayer's finest hour. Not counting Reign In Blood. Slayer returns to form with the speedy opener War Ensamble and manages to keep it's slower melodic side as well with the wonderful closing track Seasons In The Abyss. Every song in between is either the classic Thrash Metal that we all know and love or the Melodic Metal that served them well for South Of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman lay down more mature guitar solos but still manage to keep them speedy and fun. Dave Lombardo blasts out some of the best Thrash drumming ever, while Tom Araya's vocals are the classic screams but still manages to keep them very melodic. My favorite tracks are; War Ensamble, Blood Red, Spirit In Black, Dead Skin Mask, Hallowed Point, Skeletons Of Society, and Seasons In The Abyss. That's almost the entire album! Overall a great buy and reccomend this to anyone. Submitted by JamesG815 (Somers, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

UFO: Phil Mogg (vocals); Pete Way (bass guitar); Andy Parker (drums); Danny Peyronel, Michael Schenker. Personnel: Danny Peyronel (vocals, keyboards); Michael Schenker (guitar). Audio Mixer: Peter Mew. Audio Remasterer: Peter Mew. Recording information: Morgan Studios, London, England. Photographer: Hipgnosis [Design Group]. This reissue is what re-masters are all about. While the original master of UFO's HEAVY PETTING buried the quintet's sonic attack in a muddy mix, this one rediscovers their power and mints the band as a crucial link between early-`70s blues-based hard rock and late-`70s British heavy metal. Every track sounds exhilarating here--including the way-over-the-top electric harpsichord on "Belladonna"--and will rekindle any rock fan's love for these under-appreciated shredders. This reissue includes five previously unreleased tracks, all worth the price of admission for longtime fans. Following the breakout success of Phenomenon and Force It, UFO had finally ascended to the first division of British hard rock. And after hiring a second guitarist and keyboard player in Danny Peyronnel, Schenker and Mogg led the group back into the studio to record their fifth album, No Heavy Petting. A noticeably cautious effort, Petting stuck so close to the rules laid down by Force It that all the excitement of the band's performance wound up slipping through the cracks. Gutsy opener "Natural Thing" was competent enough to become a concert regular, but lukewarm material like "Can You Roll Her" and "Reasons Love" simply added nothing new. And bass player Pete Way didn't help things any with his only contribution, the plodding, amazingly dull "On with the Action." Even the album's best moment, the beautifully executed "I'm a Loser" (which unleashes Schenker for one of his most jaw-dropping solos ever), mimics Force It's "Out in the Street" ...
