Holland's goth metal outfit Within Temptation blend symphonic elements with the heavy grind of classic metal. THE HEART OF EVERYTHING, the group's sixth studio release, has all the large-screen sweep and brain-curving sonics of Within Temptation's previous releases, but comes across with an even stronger sense of purpose. Frontwoman Sharon den Adel sings in full powerhouse mode, while the band rages behind her, yet it's the grandiose arrangements that truly stand out, and--from the single "What Have You Done" to the ballad "Frozen"-- THE HEART OF EVERYTHING has many such moments.
Any goth metal band fronted by a woman post-2003 is going to be compared to Evanescence, whether they like it or not. And while they're probably sick to death of hearing this comparison, Within Temptation's fourth full-length overall, 2007's The Heart of Everything, will especially garner some comparing/contrasting to Amy Lee and company. But here's the catch for newcomers to the band: Within Temptation has been around longer than Evanescence. That said, give a listen to the male-female duet "What Have You Done," which sees Within Temptation frontwoman Sharon Den Adel paired with Life of Agony's Keith Caputo -- and guess what song it sounds a bit like (yes, you guessed it: "Bring Me to Life"!). Elsewhere, the sextet isn't afraid to get downright symphonic, even on the ballad "Frozen" plus the metallic rock of the title track and "Hand of Sorrow" (the latter of which combines both approaches, sounding a bit like Meat Loaf's latter day epics). And you've got to love a song that was inspired after a viewing of Braveheart (the aforementioned title track), which explains the sweeping "cinematics" that are on display throughout The Heart of Everything. ~ Greg PratoKerrang (Magazine) (p.47) - "[I]t has moments of genuine greatness that suggest that the band could one day become a leading force in gothic metal."

...Although I also enjoy Evanescense, and want to take nothing away from the incredible accomplishments that band has acheived, Within Tempation is a perhaps fairly unrecognized band to date, and for the record, I would like to say that as far as I'm concerned, a band that has been unfairly unrecognized, to no one's fault, but nonetheless, overshadowed, for their remarkable and considerable talent in the goth/rock genre largely due to the humongous success of Evanescence (of which I also enjoy!). This is, of course, part of the music industry, I understand. But I would just like it to be known that I have fully enjoyed Within Tempation's material and think it apropoe that they penned from the track, "Frozen" (one of my personal favorites), "I sacrificed for you" within the lyrics.
You go, Within Tempation! My advice to anyone not familiar with this group, pick this one up! You won't regret it!

Within Temptation seem to get better and better, as each new CD comes out. Not sure why they added one piece from their previous CD, but the rest of "Heart" is very good. Starting with the Title track, "The Heart of Everything". This song is the centerpiece of the CD and is the best cut on the CD. Sharon Den Adel modifies her voice a bit on this track in places; her voice is more harsh and significantly different. I liked it. There is a thread or theme of religion througout the CD, which can make for some powerful themes or musicscapes. This CD is just excellent.

not a bad song here. this is the best cd i have bought that is this great in years. can't wait for the new cd/dvd release. i can't say enough about this cd. every member of the band is great. but this cd and be amazed.

absolutely fantastic. within temptation is a great band. hand of sorrow, the cross, and what have you done are the stand tracks here. i would definitely recommend this to anyone who appreciates good metal bands

Greg Lyons was born in Tynemouth, England, on the 11th of August 1958.
