Ken Burns' seven-part series tells the story of World War II through the personal accounts of men and women. After tackling the truly American subjects of jazz and baseball, award-winning documentarian Ken Burns returns to our country's military history with THE WAR. His acclaimed 1991 series, THE CIVIL WAR, was devoted to the War Between the States, while this 2007 production pays the same amount of care and attention to World War II. Rather than keeping THE WAR on the frontlines, Burns and his fellow director Lynn Novick also explore life on the homefront in four towns: Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and Luverne, Minnesota. Keith David, who also lent his baritone to KEN BURNS' JAZZ, narrates this documentary series, while actors such as Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Lucas, and Adam Arkin give readings of historical accounts of those who fought on the other side of the world, as well as those who were fighting in their own way back home. Ken Burns - The War Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A Movie everyone in America should see ! Being a WWII history buff, I wondered how much old footage I would see. Outstanding! Is it any wonder why they call this (WW2) generation "The Greatest Generation"?
Being from the Sacramento area, the focus on Sacramento as one of the four war cities personalized this to me to some extent. The footage and stories of heroism were truly riveting.
What a tragedy that we are losing so many of our WW2 vets. Luckily, some of their stories live on in quality documentaries such as this.
If you have relatives that served in the military, or in this war, I highly recommend you see this set. What a gem! Submitted by Steve (West Sacramento, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Large war and 5 stars for those who were lost When I first heard of Ken Burns doing a documentary about World War II about 2 years ago I was thinking man this is gonna be huge. I took a World War II History course in college, which I'm glad, I found it useful. I already own the "Civil War" which every American should own. I knew this would be a large task for Ken Burns, but I like how he uses 4 US towns as a base for presentation of the rather, huge conflict among many nations. I'm unsure of how many people died during World War II (all people and all coutries) died it probably will never be known. Ken Burns delivers it here! I have a book called "2194 Days of War" about WW II, it was purchased at a bookstore in 1993 and it was a terrific book to follow along with the Ken Burns saga. $10.49 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter ...

Ken Burns - The War video
$10.55 Don Cheadle gives a riveting performance as Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of a European-owned hotel in Rwanda, who created a secret refugee camp for the Tutsi people during the brutal genocide committed against them by the Hutu people in 1994. His efforts helped to save 1200 lives out of close to a million who were killed. HOTEL RWANDA shows this man's courage, while also capturing the political events that occurred between April and September '94. First, United Nations soldiers are restricted from fighting back against Hutu guerillas, even after the Rwandan president is assassinated and the country is thrown into chaos. But as the fighting worsens, all non-Rwandans including UN peacekeepers, Europeans, and Americans are evacuated. This leaves the Tutsi people defenseless against aggressive Hutus who are armed with machine guns and machetes. While working the system with strategic phone calls to powerful international contacts of the hotel, Rusesabagina also uses smart lies and power plays to hold off the ...

Ken Burns - The War film
$10.09 America's most incendiary filmmaker, Michael Moore, returned in 2007 with this health-care-industry exposé. SICKO tackles material as controversial as the topics explored in Moore's other films, yet does so in a way that places the focus on ordinary Americans affected by the nation's health-care crisis. After providing some historical background on how our nation's medical care system became so ravaged and unfair, Moore interviews a series of individuals and families who have had their lives all but destroyed by the denial of care in the service of profit. While there are two sides to the gun-control debate and even a legitimate discourse for how to best wage the war on terror, it's simply impossible to justify how a baby girl can wind up dead because her mother's health insurance ...

$8.79 In I AM LEGEND, Will Smith joins the ranks of Vincent Price (in 1964's THE LAST MAN ON EARTH) and Charlton Heston (in 1971's OMEGA MAN) as the star of an adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name. Often surprising in its focus on loneliness and loss, this thoughtful, eerie, and restrained sci-fi horror film provides a parade of startling visuals, but never allows special effects to overcome the human element. Smith, in a strong performance very different from his usual persona, is Robert Neville, the lone survivor in ...
