Works Songs from the this talented bunch from Minnesota, leads a life of its own. Leon Laudenbach who wrote 14 of the songs here explores different avenues and byways of everyday life. The opening track with dobro and bottleneck electric guitars creates a perfect inter-play that supports a song about a preachers advise. Ghost on the Courthouse Steps is a blues deversion on the plight of a homeless from the other side. Songs like Bent out of Shape, Sizemoligist and Bypass the Blues show the true grit of these players. For the Ladies is a compeling instrumental in the english folk tradition. Great harp playing on the majority of the tracks supplied by Mark (Sparky Anderson), who's style closely resembles Norton Buffalo, also Andy Dee adds slide and lap steel on a few of the tracks. Randy Mickelberg and Leon practice the art of guitar weaving(what ever the hell that means)listening is believing. It all leads to a very solid disc.The Buddwa Mambo's (spreek uit boudoi'r mamboos) zijn het geesteskind van Leon Laudenbach, de man die onder zijn eigen naam, maar ook met projecten als The Jake And Lee Band en Taboo Blue cd's uitbrengt, een man die heel wat in zijn mars heeft duidelijk. Hij groeide op in een farm in Minnesota, en werd volgens strikte kristelijke regels opgevoed. Zijn grootmoeder leerde hem piano spelen, iets waarvoor hij nog altijd dankbaar is, vervolgens kwamen de accordeonlessen en toen het hem duidelijk werd dat accordeonisten extra laag scoorden bij de meiden kwam hij terecht in een spiraal van slecht gedrag en veel geluk, door dat vele geluk had zijn slecht gedrag echter weinig gevolgen en kwam hij deze periode zonder noemenswaardige schade door. Het was duidelijk nu, een gitaar zou het worden. Een Fender Telecaster uit 1970, door een vriend gekocht in een pandjeshuis voor 200 dollar belandde bij hem en tot op heden is die van de partij bij elk optreden. De eerste band waar Leon mee te maken had waren de Mississippi King Bees, die in 1991 een cd maakten, Leon noemt het nog steeds een prachtplaat. Daarna volgde Holy Catfish, waarvan ook een cd verscheen. Als vaste job had Leon een heel saai en frustrerend werk, hij stond aan de persen van een offset drukkerij. Tijdens de 'wachttijd' schreef hij meer dan 150 songs uit verveling. Hij was dat werk zo moe dat hij besliste een eigen studio te bouwen die hij nog steeds uitbaat, de Spacely Sparks Studio. De band Holy Catfish evolueerde tot Taboo Blue, een band die nog steeds bestaat en zopas hun vierde cd uitbrachten met de mooie titel ' The Wrath Of God And A Plymouth Fury III' (waarover misschien meer binnenkort, net als over de onlangs verschenen solo cd van Leon :'The Gospel Truth According To Leon'). Terug naar de Buddwa Mambo's nu: hun 'Work Songs' is, om maar meteen met de deur in huis te vallen, een sterke plaat. Vanaf de eerste noten van de openingsong 'It Ain't Rock Bottom (But It's Close To The Hole)', weet je dat dit een meer dan behoorlijke rootsplaat gaat worden, de slidegitaar van Leon, gospelachtige vocalen, een sterke melodie, dat alles helpt mee om een mooie sfeer neer ...
