| | Murphy's Romance DVD (1985) Widescreen
Shortcut to Happiness video
$5.69 A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in the small Arizona town where he lives. With her she brings her son Jake, and a feisty attitude. Though this sounds like a set-up from any number of other film romances, it becomes clear from their first meeting that the director, ...

Shortcut to Happiness film
GOD'S CHILDREN is a wrenching documentary about the residents of Payatas, one of the largest garbage dumps in the world, just outside the city of Manila. Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Shinomiya explored this hellish place in an earlier documentary, SCAVENGER: FORGOTTEN CHILDREN, and returned for this follow-up nearly a decade later. Before the film even has a chance to introduce the struggling families that are its focus, subtitles inform the audience that the area was ravaged by monsoons. Subsequently, one of the two gigantic mountains of garbage that comprise the dump collapses, burying up to a thousand people in their ramshackle huts. The Philippine government then closes the dump. This makes life much more difficult for the poor people of Payatas, who earn their living ...

Shortcut to Happiness review
The decision by the United Nations to maintain only a minimal military presence in Rwanda in 1994 proved fatal for the native Tutsi people. As the UN floundered, some 800,000 Tutsis perished at the hands of powerful Hutu guerillas, who wreaked havoc on the country. A cinematic take on these calamitous events was provided by 2004's HOTEL RWANDA, which dramatized the story of a secret Tutsi refuge camp constructed by brave hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina. A much darker side to the tale unfolds in SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL, with filmmaker Peter Raymont constructing a fascinating documentary about Roméo Dallaire, the UN general in charge of the nominal UN military effort in Rwanda. Although drawing on footage from ...

Shortcut to Happiness film
$10.29 Christmas wishes come true in Lance Rivera's (THE COOKOUT) second turn as a director, THE PERFECT HOLIDAY. Struggling songwriter Benjamin Armstrong (Morris Chestnut) is an all-around nice guy who is both looking for love and waiting for his big break. In the meantime, he works part-time as a shopping mall Santa, and one day receives a sweet request from young Emily (Khail Bryant): all she wants for Christmas is for her mommy to meet a nice man. A busy divorced single mother of three, Nancy (Gabrielle Union) has lost her faith in love since her bitter divorce from James, aka mega-rap star J-Jizzy (Charlie Murphy). When Benjamin uses Emily's inside information to make her Christmas wish come true, it looks likes he's found love with Nancy. But will a big career break cost him everything? And will Nancy's eldest son, John-John (Malik Hammond) accept him and give up on his dream that his parents will reconcile? With some help from Mrs. Christmas (Queen Latifah), reminiscent of Clarence in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, they all just might have a perfect holiday.
Murphy, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his younger brother Eddie, is fun as J-Jizzy, pushing the gangsta rapper stereotype to comic extremes. Terrence Howard appears briefly as Bah-Humbug, who attempts to foil ...

Shortcut to Happiness DVD
$13.55 Actor-turned-director Brian Robbins (VARSITY BLUES, THE PERFECT SCORE) is at the helm of comedian Eddie Murphy's alien adventure, MEET DAVE. Murphy stars as the minuscule captain of an alien spaceship that lands on Earth in the shape of a human being that looks just like him. The tiny crew is responsible for making the spaceship look and act like a human being as they search for a powerful orb that went off course and landed in Manhattan. Along the way, the captain--aka Dave--is befriended by Josh (Austyn Lind Myers), a fifth-grade boy who is being raised by his artist mother, Gina (Elizabeth Banks), since the death of his heroic Naval officer father. Although Dave and his crew land on Earth believing that the human race is inferior, they soon realize that there is something to be said for emotions, feelings, and friendship.
The fun in this film lies in watching the spaceship Murphy try to assimilate as a human. His exaggerated facial expressions are priceless, and his skill at physical comedy ...
