Five Finger Death Punch: Ivan Mooby (vocals); Darrell Roberts (guitar); Matt Snell (bass guitar); Zoltan Bathory, Jeremy Spencer. Personnel: Zoltan Bathory (guitar); Jeremy Spencer (drums). Audio Mixer: Logan Mader. Recording information: Complex Studios, Los Angeles, CA (2006-2007); Next Level Studios (2006-2007). As its name indicates, Five Finger Death Punch packs a serious sonic wallop. On WAY OF THE FIST, the band offers up its appealing brand of metal, which moves between hardcore, ominous black metal, and melodic metal a la System of a Down or Alice in Chains. Tunes like the opener "Ashes" and "Salvation" are cases in point, alternating pummeling, in-your-face verses with winding, hooky choruses. WAY OF THE FIST rocks hard, and--with its sense of variety-- should appeal to metalheads of many stripes.
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "Dig a little deeper and the clean guitar lines and vocal hooks are there but they generally play second fiddle to the general aural blitzkrieg..." | | Drowning Pool Full Circle CD (2007)
Way Of The Fist
$12.15 Photographer: Michelle Overson. The year 2007 found Drowning Pool banking hard on dodging the Van Halen curse with their debut of a third lead vocalist. After a less than flattering one-album run with singer Jason "Gong" Jones, guitarist C.J. Pierce and company sound confident and reinvigorated by the presence of newcomer Ryan McCombs (formerly of Soil). FULL CIRCLE, which also marks the group's move to Eleven Seven Music, features a more vocally melodic approach, and shows a heavy nod to the influence of Alice In Chains. First off, Drowning Pool are docked points for ...

| | Surrogate Love Is For The Rich CD (2007)
Way Of The Fist
$12.49 The Surrogate: Chris Keene (accordion); Jordan Mallory (drums). Personnel: Jordan Mallory (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Rick Keene, Jon Wesley (vocals); Casey Dietz (accordion). Audio Mixer: Steven Dail. Recording information: A Friend's Warehouse, Chico, CA (04/2007); Chris' Bedroom (04/2007). Surrogate, a two-man band composed of multi-instrumentalist, singer, and engineer Chris Keene and drummer Jordan Mallory, followed up their 2007 debut for Tooth & Nail, the lo-fi LOVE IS FOR THE RICH, with 2009's harmonically fulsome POPULAR MECHANICS. This is somewhat ironic since Keene and Mallory left their previous band, Number One Gun, partly because they were tired of the whole emo-derived "wall-of-sound" characterizing that group. POPULAR MECHANICS is sonically dense at times, too, but it is most notable for its singer-songwriter delicacy and nuance, highly reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens's 2005 indie-rock masterpiece, COME ON FEELTHE ILLINOISE. Nothing if not aware of dynamics, Surrogate avoid indie preciousness by deliberately ...

Elvis Costello was as much a pub rocker as he was a punk rocker and nowhere is that more evident than on his debut, My Aim Is True. It's not just that Clover, a San Franciscan rock outfit led by Huey Lewis (absent here), back him here, not the Attractions; it's that his sensibility is borrowed from the pile-driving rock & roll and folksy introspection of pub rockers like Brinsley Schwarz, adding touches of cult singer/songwriters like Randy Newman ...
