| | Adama Coulibaly Village Baba CD Adama Coulibaly Discography of CDs
Coulibaly, who accompanied Keita on his 2005 album M'Bemba, hails from Wassoulou in the south of Mali. He is steeped in the traditions of the region's donsoton (hunters) and their music, played on the rustic harp-like instruments the donsogoni and its close relative, the kamalengoni. A pupil of Sibiri Samak‚, perhaps the best known of the Wassoulou hunter-singers, Coulibaly has a voice that's a sinuously virtuosic instrument, although with rougher edges than Keita's, whose guest vocals grace the opening track. He's also a skilled player of the donsogoni and uses the instrument to create a hypnotic, almost trance-like sound that in places has strong similarities with Moroccan Gnawa. This is traditional, non-urban African music in an almost totally uncompromised form, more or less as you might hear it played by hunters in a Wassoulou village. Village Baba CD music
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought ...

| | Suns Of Arqa Universe City CD (2001)
Village Baba songs
$12.79 This 2001 release from long-running world music collective Suns of Arqa was produced by leader Michael Wadada and Laszlo Hortobagyi. Four tracks were remixed by Youth (Killing Joke) and Yoad.
This is one of several collaborations between Michael Wadada, founder and leader of the Suns of Arqa, and the Hungarian folkloric bandleader Laszlo Hortobagyi and his Gayan Uttejak Orchestra. These recordings have been an interesting and rewarding departure for Wadada, much of whose work up until this point has focused on fusions of South Asian, reggae, and funk influences. Those influences are all here as well; on this album, the Suns of Arqa include a vocalist as well as players of the shenai, sarangi, and tabla along with Wadada's own electric bass and slide guitar. But the foremost sounds are often those of some kind of keening East European reed instrument, and ...

| | Shareefa Point Of No Return CD (2006)
Village Baba songs
$9.79 Urban contemporary diva Shareefa built her name as a member of Ludacris's Disturbing the Peace collective to which she lent her alternately gutsy and floating vocals to DTP's second compilation. The singer's full-length solo debut, POINT OF NO RETURN, out on Ludacris's Def Jam-affiliated DTP label, makes good on the buzz surrounding the young singer by offering up a full course of slow jams, soulful mid-tempo numbers, and thumping club bangers. Comparisons to Mary J. Blige are inevitable, but if Shareefa's singing isn't yet developed enough to give Blige a run for her money, the impressive neo-soul performances on POINT OF NO RETURN suggest she's very much in the race.
