| | Three Days Grace Life Starts Now CD (2009)
Ghost Train music CDs
$13.59 The third studio album from Canadian arena rockers Three Days Grace treads familiar ground, presenting 12 slabs of the kind of reliable, accessible, and serviceable hard rock that will always have an audience. 2006's ONE-X dealt heavily with vocalist Adam Gontier's personal demons, a theme that continues on LIFE STARTS NOW, albeit with a hint of sunlight. With a sound that lands somewhere in between Breaking Benjamin, Collective Soul, and Godsmack--Gontier sounds like a less volatile Trent Reznor--LIFE STARTS NOW treats the well-worn metal themes of anger, isolation, heartache, and redemption with the kind of begrudging respect they deserve, pumping out a competent flurry ...
| | Metallica Death Magnetic CD (2008)
Ghost Train songs
$15.65 In the five years between the two releases, Metallica seem to have gotten back in touch with the raw power of their classic period, with a little help from legendary producer Rick Rubin. One listen to the 10-minute epic "Suicide & Redemption" with its mix of raw rock ferocity and complex musical development should tell you the old Metallica's back in business. Long tracks with complex structures and intricate, speedy riffs abound. Most appealing for longtime fans may be the return to the frenzied guitar solos of yore. Rubin seems to have assisted the band on a path that successfully combines power, melodicism, and pure, unadulterated metal mania, over a sonic statement that definitively proves there's nothing over-the-hill about middle-aged metal.
The world at large got a fly-on-the-wall view ...
| | Slayer Reign In Blood CD (1986)
Ghost Train album
$9.59 Slayer's major-label debut remains one of the most brutal metal albums ever recorded, uncompromising in its extremes; ironically, it's their mainstream breakthrough release. Infusing its thrash sound with a hardcore-punk influence, the cacophonous quartet shifts from supernatural terror to real-life horrors with shorter songs such as "Necrophobic" and "Postmortem". The change is most notable on the gruesome depiction of Nazi butcher Josef Mengele on the frenzied epic "Angel of Death". Only the apocalyptic closing number, "Raining Blood," hearkens back to the semi-melodic Slayer style from SHOW NO MERCY and HELL AWAITS.
Throughout its short running time (28 minutes, an EP even by 1980s standards), the Rick Rubin-produced REIGN IN BLOOD unleashes a malevolent maelstrom of sound. Propelled by Dave Lombardo's pummeling ...
| | Wishbone Ash Argus CD (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded Edition
Ghost Train CD music
$6.49 On its third album, Wishbone Ash doesn't mess with its formula--as before, this long running British rock institution purveys a mix of blues, folk, and Yes- style riffs mated to endearingly cosmic lyrics. The songs here, however, are considerably more focused and well crafted than on the band's previous efforts, and the harmony singing is delightful.
As always, the band's basis is the tag team guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Fans of this duo's mix of Yardbirds- and Allman Brothers- style harmony licks and dueling solos will find much to admire here, particularly "The King ...
| | April Wine Power Play CD (1982)
Ghost Train music CDs
$17.45 Having just released two blockbuster albums in a row (the second of which contained the highest charting single of their career, "Just between You and Me"), April Wine was riding high in the early '80s. So it was quite surprising when their hot streak came to a screeching halt with the release of 1983's terribly humdrum Power Play. If only this mediocrity could have been blamed on a change ...

Ghost Train album
$7.99 MICROBRICOLAGES cd review from TIME OUT NY (issue 545)More or less the French word for âdo-it-yourself,â bricolage is a technique by which new art is assembled using clutter at hand; in anthropological terms, it also refers to a cultural identity created from subversive borrowings. Both definitions suit Album, a young, Monterrey, Mexicoâbased quartet whose second full-length, Microbricolages, offers an hour-long barrage of brief, densely constructed gemsânone of which sound Mexican in any conventional sense. CafĂ© Tacuba may be part of the bandâs heritage, but alternative-pop acts such as Radiohead, Beck and the Beta Band are far more apparent antecedents. Opening track âEs FĂĄcilâ (âitâs easyâ) leaps off the disc with a warbling, New Orderâstyle bass line and a stuttering beat, as keyboards mimic bucolic kalimbas and brassy horns. âLos Mejores Pistoleros Vienen a Tuxpanâ tags a whimsically ornate Beatlesque arrangement with a jiving vocal breakdown, which crashes abruptly into the glitchy dream-pop of âAmarama.â In âĂngel,â the band murmurs robotic harmonies that fuse the Beach Boys to Kraftwerk over a taut, jangly Talking Heads pulse. Albumâs quirky sense of humor comes to the fore in songs whose titles translate as âMoog ...
