The story behind NATURAL, the Mekons' umpteenth studio outing, is that the Leeds octet wanted to do something special for their 30th anniversary, so they hit the countryside of their native England and unplugged. While NATURAL has a back-to-the-land charm throughout its 12 mostly acoustic tracks, no one could accuse the band of going hippie. In the case of the Mekons, the campfire just provided another arena for their stumbling musings on drunken desperation and modern isolation. While the move on the surface runs somewhat antithetically to their punk roots, the Mekons were never that comfortable in the pantheon of British punk either. Twenty-two years after they arguably invented alt-country on FEAR AND WHISKEY, NATURAL may be the first time that their rootsy leanings were truly given a chance to breathe.
Despite the crippling loneliness of leadman Jon Langford's legendary warble, there's a group elation to these tracks similar to that of, say, Springsteen's THE SEEGER SESSIONS, as evidenced on tracks such as "Give Me Wine or Money" and "Shocking Curse Bird." Their's also a palpable sense of relief and pride among these blokes that they--out of all their class of '77 contemporaries--were the ones who lasted 30 years. The confidence is well earned, as NATURAL finds Langford and Co. at the top of their game with perhaps their best song cycle since I LOVE MEKONS. If NATURAL is any indication, however, there's a lot left in the Mekons' collective tank, and as they themselves chanted on the celebratory "Diamonds": "The reason for the voyage hasn't been forgot/the trail's not cold/the coals are hot." Hot indeed.

Authors: Kevin Padian; H.L. Mencken; Stanley Spencer.Rolling Stone (p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[R]eplete with chants, harmonicas...[and] found percussion....[With a] ramshackle, ritualistic, druids-at-Stonehenge mood..." Spin (p.134) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[They] are at their red-eyed best here, skirting the edges of chaos on ragged-but-right tunes like the harmonica-fueled tall tale 'The Old Fox'..." Q (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir new album is a twisted country-folk collection of pagan fertility songs....Far-out stuff indeed, but very listenable." Uncut (p.87) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Now they're an accomplished country band, inspirational to the likes of Will Oldham....[Certain songs] remind you that while fashions change, it's bands of character that endure." Magnet (p.102) - "It's full of loose sing-alongs, drunken chants and spooky ballads....We may be going to hell, but with the Mekons to guide us, we'll enjoy the ride." Dirty Linen (p.41) - "Mostly, this album has a late 1960s feel with multi-layered acoustic guitars, unpretentious but opaque lyrics, trippy melodies, and laid-back execution." No Depression (p.97) - "This band's brand of folk reggae, dusty ambiance and call-and-response exotica rarely carries any pretense....NATURAL is lit with mystery, but the fun is unwrapping its layers." Natural
$12.19 Recorded in Chicago, Illinois, New York, New York, and Amsterdam, The Netherlands between 2002 & 2003. Includes liner notes by Colin Stewart.
Is it just ironic that the Mekons, some 27 years into their journey from Leeds snot-nose guttersnipe art students to the elder statesfolk of barroom/club stage domination, have entitled their 2003 recording Punk Rock? Only partially. The truth of the matter: those Brit mischief-makers wrote these songs nearly 30 years ago; and some of them they've just come 'round to recording now in the no man's lands between Chicago and Amsterdam. These are authentic punk anthems, played by a band who actually knows how to play their instruments now. Inspired by their catalog, yet being unable to undo the effects of musical growth, the 15 songs on Punk Rock feel oddly out of time and place. There is a certain ramshackle grace in them that offers the ghostly hint of 1977's chaotic joy, but being played by people who no longer have the comfort of naivete as a cushion against the outside world. ...

$31.25 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, ...

$11.95 When indie purists decry the state of pop radio and the tastes of the record-buying public, John Vanderslice is just the type of artist they are defending. A one-man cyclone of talent, Vanderslice can write, sing, perform, and record pop music as well as anybody, but a variety of factors (his age and looks, and his sometimes challenging production choices, among other factors) keep him from the Billboard Top 10, where he undoubtedly deserves ...

Natural
$15.45 Paul Young's second album, released in 1985, THE SECRET OF ASSOCIATION was his US commercial breakthrough following the critical praise for his 1983 debut, NO PARLEZ. Thanks to two spectacular singles--the definitive version of Daryl Hall's lovely "Everytime You Go Away" and a charging rendition of the oft-covered "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" that is second only to Ann Peebles' slinky original--the record was an enormous success.
THE SECRET OF ASSOCIATION is a masterpiece of mid-'80s commercial pop. Young's secret weapons include the trilling voices of his female backing duo, The Fabulous Wealthy Tarts, incredibly lush keyboard-dominated arrangements, and Laurie Latham's panoramic, gimmicky production--which showcases (but does not smother) Young's powerful voice in a setting of odd sonic tricks. All are helped considerably by Young's increasingly confident songwriting (his "Everything Must Change" is particularly strong) and by an odd choice of covers that even includes a brilliant rendition of Tom Waits' "Soldier's Things."
In 1984, Paul Young scored a couple of medium-sized U.S. hits with "Come Back and Stay" and "Love of the Common People" from his album ...
