Recorded in a Brooklyn basement, Architecture in Helsinki's 2007 album, PLACES LIKE THIS sounds it like should've been created in a sunny clime such as southern California, the Caribbean, or even the group's native Australia. A giddy, celebratory outing, PLACES finds AIH mastermind Cameron Bird leading his ensemble through a set of largely upbeat tunes that reveal a kinship with experimental-leaning dance-pop, both past (the funky Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club-influenced "Hold Music") and present (the beat-driven "Heart It Races" recalls the Knife circa DEEP CUTS, with a little Jens Lekman thrown in for good measure). An assured, invigorated, and thoroughly fun record, PLACES is sure to be a party favorite for indie kids all around the globe.

Rolling Stone (p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "PLACES LIKE THIS turns its sound-effect juxtapositions into sheepishly functional tunes." Spin (p.122) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he band offer their richest, most eclectic accompaniment yet, with vibrant steel drums, syncopated acoustic strings, and resonant trumpet bleats." Entertainment Weekly (p.67) - "[The album] leaps from synthy party jams to steel-drum rocking tropicalia..." Uncut (p.81) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] brutally upbeat blend of Hot Chip pick 'n' mix and The B-52's' goofy chutzpah....Architect Cameron Bird's fanciful plans pay off..." Alternative Press (p.170) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Architecture in Helsinki's greatest strength is their comfort; the comfort they feel in their own abilities, and the comfort you'll feel sitting down to listen." Places Like This MP3 Album
$10.15 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at ...
| | Spoon Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga CD (2007)
Places Like This music CDs
$12.95 By 2007 Spoon had grown into one of the most quietly inventive and accomplished outfits in rock. Like 2005's excellent GIMME FICTION, GA GA GA GA GA is a winning combination of hook-heavy pop and post-punk angles driven by a unique piano-guitar interplay and singer Britt Daniels's expressive vocals. But Spoon's secret ingredient is their spare, often brilliant arrangements. Like a Japanese calligrapher drawing on rice paper, Spoon applies minimal lines and shading to make each song a meticulous pop universe full of texture and subtlety.
The ephemeral and appropriately haunting "The Ghost of You Lingers" is a fine example; its radically pared-down piano motif and elliptical melody sound like a cross between Terry Riley and Paul McCartney. "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" employs a bouncy Motown groove and horns, ...

$11.99 (MP3 Available for Download) What's gotten into Okkervil River? While the band has always been basically the vehicle for the songs and musings of frontman Will Sheff, their formless approach--somewhere between indie rock, emo, and roots music--has always tended to be a too-middling, too-pensive, and an altogether too-tasteful affair. STAGE NAMES changes everything. With the mixing help of Spoon drummer and Austin producer extraordinaire Jim Eno, the Austin quintet finally unleash their inner rock animals and deliver an unhinged rock-&-roll record replete with finger snaps, swaggering riffs, and Sheff's most direct and dynamic song cycle yet.
The lead-off, "Our Life Is Not A Movie and Maybe," injects a Belle and Sebastian-esque melodic theme with a sweeping rock energy that finally matches Sheff's penchant for dense, literate turns of phrase. "A Girl in Port" and "Plus Ones" masquerade ...

Places Like This music CDs
$14.79 Some artists convey an intangible quality one can only describe as having "it." Serenity is such an artist. With over two hundred songs under her belt, Serenity is the rare chanteuse who does it all. As a singer/songwriter, musician, and leader of the group Serenity Blues, Serenity manages to release an untapped reservoir of emotion in her material while evoking the skills of such powerhouse luminaries as Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, and Billie Holiday. Whether invoking her muse in the styles of funk, blues, rock, or torch ballads, her confessional, passionate style resonates throughout all eight tracks of her new release, supplemented by two songs from her original demo. Ably backed and taken to new heights by a group of seasoned studio professionals on her most recent CD, Serenity's material is allowed to shine in a new light heretofore only glimpsed at in her solo demo recordings. Versions of previously recorded songs resonate with lush instrumentation, while previously unrecorded tracks strike first with hard charging guitars and drums which provide a backdrop for Serenity to belt out her heartfelt lyrics about relationships, love and betrayal. Serenity is truly a force of nature to be reckoned with. Her works contain shades of other artists, but like all true originals, have a distinct quality of their own, and stand up to the best material of other proven, more well known artists. In a live setting, her ability to mesmerize a crowd becomes self-evident within a few songs from her repertoire of originals and well-chosen covers. Stellar versions of "Use Me" by Bill Withers and "Everybody Knows" by Leonard Cohen stand out among the rest, and evidence her range as an interpretive artist in addition to her other multi-faceted ...
