NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along at a mid-tempo clip before exploding into a heartfelt rave-up.
Most notable is a collaboration with Martin Quittenton on "You Wear It Well," an irresistible addition to the Stewart canon. Although the Sam Cooke cover is the one spot where the soulful Scot would be expected to indulge his R&B jones, Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind" is where Rod brings it all back home with a slow-burning vocal that wraps itself around the strolling tempo of the song. While not quite up to the perfection of EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY, NEVER A DULL MOMENT follows closely in its footsteps, and weighs in as Stewart's last classic album of the early '70s.

It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish IF ON A WINTER NIGHT...; no other Christmas album exists in the head like this. It's a holiday album for people who have never wanted to hear a holiday album, let alone own one.

Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black Rider, and a killer -- though equally revamped -- version of "Singapore" from 1985's Rain Dogs. Musically, the performances are flawless, as is the sound on this set. The killer stage band includes Vincent Henry on woodwinds and harmonica, guitarist Omar Torres, Patrick Warren on piano and keyboards, Casey Waits on drums/percussion, and Seth Ford Young on bass. There is also a guest appearance by Sullivan Waits on sax and clarinet; Tom plays piano and guitar. Waits decided to ax most of the stage banter from disc one, and instead created a bonus disc in this deluxe package. It is a single 35-plus-minute track called "Tom's Tales," which splices stories and dialogue, reminiscences and spontaneous comedy. ~ Thom Jurek

When he was recording his debut album in 2006, Chris Daughtry didn't have the time to assemble the real rock band he so desperately wanted to have, so it appeared under the band name Daughtry without featuring any of the musicians who later became part of the group. That's not the case with LEAVE THIS TOWN, Daughtry's second record: all five members are glowering on the album cover, floating like specters over an abandoned Californian street. The five rockers serve as visual evidence that Daughtry is a band, not a person, and such reminders may be necessary because LEAVE THIS TOWN doesn't differ much in feel or form from DAUGHTRY. Overall, LEAVE THIS TOWN isn't quite as studio slick as DAUGHTRY, which was fueled by Chris Daughtry's desire prove that he belonged in the big leagues; here, he's achieved that goal and he's happy to stay there as long as possible, giving the people what they want in the form of furrow-browed rockers and brooding power ballads, all saved from their self-conscious sobriety by arena-level hooks, hooks that come from Daughtry and a variety of co-writers including Ben Moody and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger. Daughtry brings these big hooks down to human scale, injecting warmth into his phrasing. Daughtry the band has no desire to make anything other than good, basic, black-and-white modern rock and they do so efficiently on LEAVE THIS TOWN, a sophomore album that's every bit as satisfying as the first.

Bellevue was born in the summer of 2003 when Brent Hough (lead vocals, guitar) took his ever-growing collection of home recordings from Kingston to Toronto in the hopes of finding like-minded musicians. Ever since, Bellevue has been in a constant state of change, eventually arriving at its current and comparatively stable incarnation of keyboarist David Ritter, drummer Jordan Bruce, and the longest serving member, bassist Dan Snyder. While Bellevue’s influences are diverse, the band’s sound is a focused one – song-oriented and guitar driven with a distinct pop quality. Bellevue’s debut record Lost In Space was released independently in early 2007 via the Music Maul Industries collective. An album of catchy rock tunes, it is juxtaposed by Brent’s distinct baritone vocal style. Despite a busy schedule of shows in the months following its release, Bellevue found the time to begin work on their follow-up record. While Brent Hough remained the principal songwriter, the new songs were assembled with a more collaborative spirit, and recorded the same way. The majority of the work for The Road to Recovery was completed during a 3-day marathon recording session in a cottage on the north shore of Lake Huron on Canada Day weekend, 2007. While the core elements of the band’s sound remained intact, the record captures the band in a new mind-set, exploring new textures and song structures. Recorded by the band, it was mixed by Alphonse Lanza at Parkdale Is Gay Studios and mastered by Noah Mintz at the renowned Lacquer Channel Mastering Studios. Bellevue looks forward to hitting the road in the spring and summer of 2008 in support of The Road to Recovery’s release.

Rochelle House was born in San Jose, California, into a large, musical family. Her father taught her the country songs that he had learned during his youth, while her mother played Miles Davis, Barbara Streisand, and Dave Brubeck records continuously. As a youngster, Rochelle studied a bit of piano. She then played the flute in school band until she was forced to march in parades. In the early ’80s, Rochelle relocated from northern California to Huntington Beach, where she studied studio singing, music theory, and recording at Golden West College.After taking twenty years away from music to focus on raising four wild and creative young artists of her own, Rochelle returned to jazz. In 2006, she introduced her music to the world on her debut recording entitled “Dreams of Love.” A collaboration with pianist Marc Seales, as well as Portland jazz greats Gary Hobbs and Dave Captein, her first cd received rave reviews and earned her a nomination for Earshot Vocalist of the Year.Rochelle’s next cd titled “Water,” is scheduled for release in the winter of 2008. This second collaboration with Marc Seales features Seattle jazz musicians D’Vonne Lewis, Evan Flory-Barnes, and Paul Rucker, as well as Cuong Vu. Rochelle’s own compositions enjoy nearly half of this cd’s minutes and the outcome awaits your listening pleasure.
