Allen Toussaint's first solo album, from 1971, established the producer and songwriter's definitive musical style of easygoing, loping New Orleans grooves. Side one is all vocals, with the flip devoted to jazzy instrumental grooves including a remarkable version of Vince Guaraldi's signature tune, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." Besides Toussaint's own version of his hit for Lee Dorsey, "Workin' In A Coal Mine," TOUSSAINT also includes his own signature tune, "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky." This reissue adds two more instrumentals, "Number Nine" and "Poor Folks."
As intimated by the cover art, this album is a close-up and personal portrait. Although the multi-talented hitmaker had become a living legend within the thriving musical community of his native Crescent City, Allen Toussaint more often than not deferred the spotlight to the vocalists for whom he wrote, produced, and arranged. Released in 1970, Allen Toussaint was only his second LP during a career that (at the time) had already outpaced practically all of his contemporaries. The ten songs on the original LP provided a launching pad for Toussaint in front of the microphone, while likewise being a springboard for the direction that he would take during the ensuing years as a solo act. Providing Toussaint (piano/lead vocals) some sonic support is a combo consisting of Terry Kellman (guitar), Mac Rebennack aka Dr. John (organ/guitar), Eddie Hohner (bass), Freddie Staehle (drums), John Boudreaux (drums), Clyde Kerr (trumpet), and Earl Turbinton (alto sax), plus the dynamic pairing of Merry Clayton and Venetta Fields on backing vocals. One theme that runs throughout all of Toussaint's work -- for others as well as himself -- is the innate undercurrent of bayou rhythms infused within each and every number. These are particularly evident on the instrumental selections "Either," "Louie," and especially "Pickles." The latter also contains supreme substantiation of Toussaint's utterly underrated keyboarding as he effortlessly drifts between a jazzy rag and haunting melodic runs reminiscent of Burt Bacharach. The influences spill over into the vocal-centric sides as "Chokin' Kind" is soppin' with a Memphis or Muscle Shoals sensibility. Conversely, the joyful "Sweet Touch of Love" has a soulful syncopation that plays on the traditional sounds of New Orleans. There are also the artist's updates of his own compositions "Working in the Coal Mine" and "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky" -- which he penned for Lee Dorsey, who obliged by making both R&B hits and significant pop crossovers. More than simple remakes, Toussaint reveals his abilities as a convincing crooner, even giving Bonnie Raitt a run for her money with his sly attitude-laden reading of "What Is Success." Parties interested in Allen Toussaint's pre-Warner Bros. material are encouraged to find the 2007 What Is Success: The Scepter and Bell Recordings anthology, as it boasts a freshly remastered edition of all the tunes mentioned here and no less than three additional rare 45s circa 1968 and 1969 that slightly predate the Allen Toussaint project. [This CD reissue of Allen Toussaint includes the bonus tracks "Number Nine" and "Poor Folks," both of which are instrumentals.] ~ Lindsay Planer

Allen Toussaint is one of the greatest songwriters to emerge from the city of New Orleans. The astonishing array of artists who have recorded his tunes include The Rolling Stones (“Fortune Teller”), Lee Dorsey, The Judds and Devo (“Working In The Coal Mine”), Glen Campbell (“Southern Nights”), The Band (“Holy Cow”), The Pointer Sisters (“Yes We Can”), Robert Palmer (“Sneakin’ Sally Thru The Alley”) and Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass (“Whipped Cream,”) to name just a few.
This highly sought after album was first issued in the early 70s, and features Allen playing several of his hit songs. This CD also includes two tracks not included on the original album.

Combining layered vocals with a heavily looped guitar sound, "Until We Sleep" begins ABOUT FACE with an almost Byrds-like quality, while the gentleness of the acoustic opening to the ballad "Murder" disguises its homicidal subject matter. Both "Love On the Air," and "All Lovers are Deranged," are distinguished by lyrics written by Pete Townshend, and "Blue Light" is an attempt at funk with a Floydian flavor. Gilmour's strength at ballad writing is evidenced in "Out of the Blue," while the obligatory instrumental is "Let's Get Metaphysical." The album closer is, appropriately enough, the song "Near the End." All in all an essential album in any Floyd fan's collection.

Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Almost a missing mid-period Floyd album, this solo effort is a must-have for all Pink Floyd fans.
By the time of David Gilmour's solo debut, he had not only established himself several times over as an underrated, powerful guitarist in Pink Floyd, but as a remarkably emotional singer, his soothing approach perfectly suited to such songs as "Wish You Were Here." Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the title track is a sophisticated, extended piece that moves through several different moods and textures, full of the elliptical, poetic lyrics that were Morrison's trademark.
The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren't entirely successful. More to the point, though, this was their weakest set of material, low lights including filler like "Do It" and "Runnin' Blue," a strange bluegrass-soul blend that was a small hit.
