A superior swing-based tenor saxophonist influenced by Stan Getz and Scott Hamilton, Harry Allen has made an increasingly strong reputation during numerous recordings and countless live appearances. But even with his growing discography, Hits by Brits may very well be Allen's finest all-round recording, at least to date. He absolutely burns on the uptempo pieces ("Cherokee," "Roses of Picardy," "Just in Time," and "Limehouse Blues"), his tone sounds a bit more personal than earlier (moving a little away from Getz) and he was very clearly inspired during the project. Trombonist John Allred is an exuberant asset whenever he appears, guitarist Joe Cohn has yet to take a tasteless or unworthy solo, and the team of bassist Joel Forbes and drummer Chuck Riggs keep the music swinging and moving. The ten songs were all written by Englishmen or English-born songwriters. More importantly, all are worth hearing again in this setting. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

Hits By Brits CD music
$11.39 Vinyl LP version also available directly from the label at www.whatmusic.comO Pulo do GatoEdison would always say "when I play music it is like a cat jumping, whatever happens I always land on four feet!" That is why this second "Obras" album is really called "O Pulo do Gato" meaning "the cat's jump". As you listen to this album, you can imagine Edison calling out "O pulo do Gato!" without even a pause in his drumming! The Samba GrooveThe drum music of Edison Machado is a beautiful relation of exclusiveness and inclusiveness. In his playing he expresses the specific, characteristic groove of samba, true to its roots, which excludes all other music genres; and at the same time one hears the world in it, through combinations of rhythms that relate the samba to all other rhythmic manifestations in the planet. His music is also personal and impersonal, for although his playing is distinct from everybody else, it has a universal quality that touches anyone, anywhere and at anytime now, past and future. Such are attributes found in great artists. Edison Machado is, in my opinion, one of the greatest drummers who ever lived. He is certainly the drummer who has most influenced Brasilian ...

Hits By Brits songs
$15.45 Recorded between 1967 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Jim Ladd.
Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly remixed by original engineer Bruce Botnick and the surviving members of the Doors, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS is a solid tribute to the band.
The first Doors album was an important development in the evolution of rock, representing the dark underbelly of the '60s counterculture, the Jekyll to the Beatles/Beach Boys' Hyde. The Doors were the antithesis of windblown Californian pop. Dark, brooding and alienated, every element of the quartet's metier was unveiled on their debut album. In Jim Morrison they posessed one of rock's authoritative voices, while the group's dense instrumental prowess reflected his lyrical mystery. Highly literate, they wedded Oedipian tragedy with counter-culture nihlism and, in "Light My Fire", expressed exotic images previously unheard in pop. Howlin' Wolf, Brecht and Weill are acknowledged as musical reference points, a conflict between the physical and cerebral that give THE DOORS its undiluted tension. Or you can just enjoy it as a brilliant album that sucks you in as it breathes out the '60's.
