The Jimmy Reed Highway is a well-traveled thoroughfare as storied and rich in legend throughout the southern United States as Robert Johnson's mythical Crossroads. It runs through the minds of men and women of a certain age, complexion, and place who grew up during the era of segregation and who defied their parents, the law, and all genteel propriety and custom by answering one bluesman's invitation to cross the color line and join him getting lowdown and dirty as he serenaded a generation from the bandstand, on jukeboxes, and through the radio.
Omar Kent Dykes of Omar & the Howlers teams up with Fabulous Thunderbirds axeman Jimmie Vaughan on this tribute to blues giant Jimmy Reed. Dykes's thick, deliciously deep, Howlin' Wolf-like tones and Vaughan's spare, visceral style prove to be the perfect match for this batch of classics from the Reed catalogue. Dykes and Vaughan don't try to reinvent the wheel; they stick pretty close to the raw, shuffling sound of the original recordings, but never in a slavishly imitative way. Stellar guests like James Cotton and Delbert McClinton sweeten the pot even further.
Additional personnel: Lou Ann Barton (vocals); Derek O'Brien (guitar); Delbert McClinton, Gary Primich, James Cotton , Kim Wilson (harmonica); Barry Bimh, Ronnie James (bass guitar); Jay Moeller, Wes Starr, George Rains (drums).
Living Blues (p.47) - "[A]n inspired tribute....Dykes' deep, rough vocals and Vaughan's Texas shuffle guitar anchor the record..." No Depression (p.99) - "The final result is more than just a very cool tribute album; it's one of the most satisfying blues sets is year.' | On The Jimmy Reed Highway Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Great new take on Jimmy Reed Classics by a Texas Legend! Omar hits it with all cylinders firing on his take of some great Jimmy Reed Songs. Toss in Jimmy Vaughn and fellow The Fabulous Thunderbirds vocalist/harmonica player Kim Wilson. Spread with former Double Trouble alumnist Lou Ann Barton and this disc really soothes your soul. Not to mention other Texas greats like; Gary Clark Jr, Delbert McClinton, Gary Primich, James Cotton, Derek O'Brien, Barry Bimh, Ronnie James, Jay Moeller, Wes Starr and George Rains that all help give this cd its' grit and bite. You can definitely say these songs are brought back to life in some very capable hands and it shows. Omars unique vocals stand out and truly give these versions their punch! And let's not forget the final cut, penned my Omar himself along with his son on drums in a tribute to his mom and Omar's wife who has gone. Vaughan and Dykes Nails the Jimmy Reed Groove Growing up in Texas, Jimmy Reed (not Clapton) was "god." These guys put it down just like the real big boss man did it. With help from outstanding musicians like Kim Wilson, Delbert McClinton, Lou Ann Barton and a kick-ass rhythm section, they do it with true heart and a raw realism that makes it one of the best pure blues cds this year. Highly recommended One of the benefits of collecting records in the early 1970s was that nearly every one of Jimmy Reed’s many records could be found in cut-out bins. Reed’s thick Mississippi drawl often made his lyrics unintelligible, but his looping blues rhythms were irresistible. This CD reminds one of the joys of first hearing the likes of “Take Out Some Insurance,” “You Don’t Have To Go,” “Going Upside Your Head” and “High and Lonesome.” With special guests Kim Wilson and Lou Ann Barton in tow, Omar Dykes and JimmyVaughan pay a well deserved tribute to “The Bossman.”
The rollicking title track underlines the importance of Reed because if you play blues, at some point in the night you’re going to do at least one Reed cover. Hits including “Baby What You Want Me to Do,” “Big Lights Big City” and “Big Bossman,” are artfully covered, as are lesser known gems “You Upset My Mind” and “Good Lover.” Dykes doesn’t slur his words as Reed did, instead handling the lyrics with a big, booming vocal style. When he sings, “Aw shucks, hush your mouth,” you aren’t going to say a word. What can you say about Vaughan’s guitar work is very reminiscent of his playing with the Fab T-Birds, and even his simple turnarounds are interesting.
Highly recommended. Volume two, guys?

$11.39 The original material reveals roots in rock, funk, R&B, and soul, and at times, a hint of gospel and rockabilly. The band has worked hard to craft a signature sound that transforms easily from high-energy rockers to blues ballads. Although serious about their music, the Phat noiZ Blues Band occasionally projects its sense of humor into songs about love, life, and its complexities. The rapid-fire guitar attack of Alvin Jett is complimented by jazz influenced sax riffs delivered by musical partner Frank Bauer, fueled by driving rhythms of Jeremy West, and held together by the tenacious bass lines of Matt Davis. Milk and Cookies was co-produced by Steve Ewing of Ten Ton Productions with the help of the band. The album was also engineered and mixed by Steve and recorded at Music Creek Soundworks Inc. in St. Louis. Guests on the album include harmonica player, Arthur “Mississippi” Williams, who also provides background vocals, and Rich McDonough on slide guitar.A native of East St. Louis, Alvin Jett has been entertaining audiences throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area for twenty-five years. Although Jett came from a musical family, he didn't seriously start playing guitar until he was 20 years old. Jett quickly learned the rudiments, and received his formal blues education playing with Tommy Bankhead & the Blues Eldorados honing his skills into his own fiery brand of hard driving St. Louis blues. The Phat noiZ Blues Band is Jett’s means for delivering to the audience his brand of in-your-face, hard driving ...
